well, i told myself i would just keep this thing running and get my licensee on it...... well, just like my car, I can't stop myself from tinkering with things, so I figured I'd start a "progress" thread.

Hopefully I can get around to the rear wheel before the weekend is over haha

the bike looks clean. the little 175 are fun. haven't been able to ride since i first got it home but my buddy just got one also and i can't wait to get my finished. looks like you have a 200 tank

Thanks, the previous owner put on a tank and seat from a cb200 and some different handlebars i believe.

Just picked up some tubes, strips, and tires, so that will be my next project. I am debating whether or not I should just take my wheels off and then take them to a shop to get the tires mounted or just do it myself.

Also, does anyone know why my front brake cable is leaking grease? There isn't a reservoir anywhere for fluid, so i can't figure out why this is happening...

my leaking forks make it look like the brakes are leaking.
is there any noise when you push on the bars like a squish or bubble noise or any obvious seeping under the covers?

I'll have to go check. When I took the fender off, one of the bolts that held it to the fork was dripping and it seemed to be coming out of that hole on the fork...

The cable itself or the bottom end where it connects to the hub. If it's in the middle, it needs replaced. If it's the end, it will just need wiped off. The forks can leak from 3 different spots: seals (top), drain bolts (side), or the bottom bolt (hidden by the axle)

Good to see another 175!

thanks for the info Big rich, helping me out once again! The cable is wet at the conection to the hub (where the cable comes out of the rubber housing and clips onto the bracket/ bent cotter pin) I've been wiping it off frequently. No leaks up top on the forks though.

Are there any other signs that my seals are bad that i can look for while riding it?

Unless you've been riding for a long time and can "feel" the dampening is gone from the forks, no. Have you looked inside the front brake hub yet? There should be some grease in there, but not so much that it's oozing into the cable.

I would wipe all the grease / oil from the front end, take it for a ride around the block a couple times and check for any more grease / oil

well, the hub looks fine... but thats the least of my worries now. I cleaned my right side carb today and now only one cylinder seems to be running  I'll be taking that back apart again in the morning and trying to figure out what is going on. However I did get some new tires mounted with the help of my dad today and a new fuel cap gasket, so at least there is some forward progress haha.

Bummer about the 1 cylinder.

If you need a part for the stock Keihins, let me know. I swapped mine out for Mikunis and still have the originals.

well, figured I'd throw this up.... Just bought this today for $20 haha
It needs a Lot of work but you can't get anything for $20 so i figured i'd take it.

now i have two bikes that don't run ::)

I got parts for the hawk if you need em, easy bike to work on, motor drops out with like 6 bolts. You can clean it all up and bolt it back in without removing anything but the clutch cable (easy) and tach cable (even easier) there are some nice hawk builds on here. Oh and if the motor is toast, don't rebuild it the 82-89 450's from the CB450 hawks, CM450T or C and 450 Night hawks bolt right up and have better bottom ends, oiling systems and oil coolers. they can be had in running shape for like 100 bucks. I know cause my motor blew and the cost to rebuild was way higher than finding the 450.

I like the 175 too. I am trying to find a project since I saw Rich's bike in WV.

Cheers,

Maritime

Good score on the scoot! Heck, i would have paid $50 for it.

And Mike, i think the 175 would be a bit "lacking" compared to what you're used to. ;D

thanks for the heads up on the motor! I havn't tried to start it yet, i was told that i should wd-40 the cylinders before i try to turn it over... should I do anything else? I just got the carbs off and will be cleaning them either tomorrow or the next day.... Always open for advice or suggestions.

Big Rich, if this doesn't work out, ill sell it too you for $50 haha

i guess ill have to re-title this thread...
Here are some pics of this weekend, cleaned the carbs, inside of tank (its still way too dirty), and cleaned everything else

Shinned up like a champ for sitting the last 10+ years, i still haven't broke out the polish or wax yet.

oh yeah, almost forgot.... STARTED UP and ran it for a few minutes as well!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it
Its a little loud...

im sure the carbs are clogged already from the garbage in the tank... I've got to find something that will strip the rust out of there.

Finally got her home! finished painting for the most part... still gotta touch up the front wheel.
New addition: for sale sign
