Suzuki GS425 Fuel Filter

I'm rebuilding a '79 Suzuki GS425 that I bought over the winter as a collection of pieces. I can't figure out whether it needs a fuel filter in addition to the mesh strainer at the top of the petcock assembly. I can't find any reference in the manuals or pictures that show a filter between the petcock and the carbs. Is that little mesh at the top of the petcock straw sufficient as a filter, or should I try to put something inline between the petcock and the carbs?

Any guidance greatly appreciated.

First things first, that is a vacuum operated petcock. Check the bolt spacing against a late model Suzuki LS650/Boulevard S40. If they match, throw that piece of shit in the trash where it belongs and bolt on a Yamaha Raptor 660 manual petcock. Use a real Made in Japan OEM Yamaha petcock, not a Chinese knockoff. Vacuum petcocks are crap when they are new, 35 years later, can guarantee you it is junk. No external fuel filter is required, in fact, by removing it on my 2003 LS650 equipped with a real deal Yamaha Raptor 660 petcock, and going to a one piece fuel line (5/16") it runs better than ever. Best $35 invested in motorcycle parts, ever.

Yes, that's the only type of fuel filter installed. And unless your tank is pretty rusty inside, that should be the only filter you need.

Just Fyi: if your petcock is junk and you can't use a Yamaha unit you have a couple options. You can look for a rebuild kit from Z1 Enterprises (they work about 50% of the time), a NOS / OEM one from Japan (works almost 100% of the time), or a Pingel fuel valve. Pingel isn't vacuum operated and kinda expensive though. Speaking of non-vacuum petcocks......you'll need to cap off the vacuum line on your carb if you install one.
