With fairing? Absolutely. It makes the bike IMHO

Stripes? That is entirely subjective. I like either a thick center stripe with narrow stripes either side or twin 1" stripes. On the Phat Trakka, I had twin 1" stripes on a red/orange base and liked that but the new owner wanted "more" I mocked up every possible combination of black, white, silver or gold 1/4" pinstipes and he wanted back on the outside and gold in the middle. It looks very nice and he loves it but for me it's like a tart's handbag. Loosely translated for the locals, it is too fussy or gaudy for my concept of the bike.

So for me a tank stripe has to work with the aesthetics and this bike is a race look, so simple is best . Too much will look too much. Maybe two1" white stripes or try black stripes for a more subtle look.

Simple or fussy? It's a personal choice. The tank is from the original build and the tali trunk is from the last build.

As per your suggestion I am going with 2 x 1" stripes in the same red as the frame. I tried combo's of thick stripes flanked with thin stripes and as you say - too much for the style / period. IF i can find the right man I'll get manx style side panel pinstriping - but HAS to be painted.

I mocked up the continuation stripes on the seat hump - didn't look right !

The fairing is now shot in grey primer / filler and will be flatted off with 1000 wet and dry later today. I did look at continuation stripes on the fairing - but again, didn't look right.

I have to take the fairing round to my pal's garage where the finishing touches / assembly is taking place so that we can finalise the fairing mounts before I spray in top coat silver.

Hmmm, not quite how my mind saw it ......................... but it's done.

Flip the cap up and there's the ignition barrel !

It's literally a one off ! It's solid brass and was an experiment by the manufacturers "Enot" of Lichfield, England.

I went to see their sales guy at the factory to discuss having our Cobra and D Type Jag fuel caps made in a better quality alloy. They switched to using a cheaper alloy and then plating - looked horrible, but their market was public transport buses, trains, etc.

He gave me the grand tour and while I was in the drawing office I spotted the brass experimental cap - they also made the Monza caps in alloy for bikes.

After I showed an interest and promised a tour of OUR workshops [ Cobras, D Types, etc. - replicas ] he gave me the cap.

It was being used as a paper weight to hold down one corner of the drawing ! This was in the days before CADCAM.

Shown is the larger "Aston" gas cap as fitted on our C Type replicas and Cobras.

The stripes look a little "unfinished" now I look at them again ...... might grow some 1/4" pinstripes outside the 1" ??

Thanx MT, difficult to have a conversation with yourself to make decisions ! Originally I had 2 thicker stripes laid out with no outer stri[pes, but the filler cap was in the way to get a nice finish in that area.

The red pinstripe tape was just some old stuff I had laying around - it's the wrong shade and ideally I wanted 3/8" [ that's 1/4" ]. , but at least it gives me the image.

Life's bee a bitch lately ....... expensive and toxic divorce after 40 years, return of kidney problems [ chronic kidney disease ] and a brief flirtation with the big C - all issues [ except forced sale of my house in divorce settlement ] now resolved.

I'm in the process of trying to relocate the 50 years garage / shed collection, and the Boardtracker is still in bits / boxes AND trying to find a roof over my head ....................... got those violins tuned up lads ?

However, my Glemseck KZ750 Cafe Racer has been given a long term temporary home courtesy of my pal and build buddy Brian and the Boardtracker is still in bits / boxes.

We intend to have blitz on the KZ next year. and we have made a start by completing the Manx tank cover and AJS 7R seat base. Start button inside the brass monza fuel cap
