"Tangerine Dream" / Glemseck - KZ750

You are right. A bike by definition is a series of compromises that we have to make to optimize the overall package. In this case, riding position is of higher importance than certain other criteria. With lower pegs and slightly different implementation of a high pipe exhaust, the overall package should be more fun to ride and will still look great.

For someone yung, dumb and full of.. whatever, cool looks might be the most important thing but for those of as the say "of a certain age" ability to ride the bloody thing and have fun is more important - and it will look ultra coool with an inside outside pipe. Cool and practical. Who knew that was even a thing :)

Thanx for the kind words of encouragement.

I don't think I've EVER built a bike [ or car ] that hasn't evolved and changed along the way.

I've always started out with a mental image of what I wanted, or at least thought it was that I wanted . In the early days that would possibly become a series of drawings ... as I became older [ more confident ? ] they were simply sketches.

Unfortunately my pal Brian got carried away and before I could stop him he'd put a nasty crease in the superb heatshield that Uncle Rob of this parish donated for my project. I need to attend to that, but it's beyond my skills - so I'll have to look around for someone to sort it.

Basically I have to say I am relatively happy with the look we are going with.

I think the heatshield was from Mark Burton not me TJ! I'm responsible for the tank.....
And because I'm too lazy to write my own thread pic of latest projects....'49 JAP sprint bike and heavily modified Honda pizza delivery bike!!

Apologies to Mark !!!! You know that I am now classified as "senile " !!

Tjhat J.A.P. project looks intense !!! More pix details ?

To be clear, the superb one-off heatshield for my project was donated FOC by Mark Burton - apologies Mark.

And Uncle Rob fabricated the alloy belly fairing fuel cell .......... there, my 3 brain cells are back in the correct order !

We've done the first POC - all looks good so far. The second bend will be inverted to the first and bring it in line with the silencer which will be inside the frame on the left hand side.

At this stage it looks like either silencer will fit [ shortie hasn't arrived yet ], just a case now of which looks better.

Pretty much as your sketch Maritime - except the silencer will stay inside.

Next job is the get the Megga in place and mock up the second bend.

We've mocked up the top bend and purely by chance it lines up directly with the megga !! I want to try the shortie silencer as well before we make any final decisions about fettling that top bend.

It really is amazing what you can achieve with a few off the shelf bends and no welding prowess !!! I mocked up the WHOLE system using stock bends and a bit of gaffer tape to hold it all in place until I could get it welded.

I'm hoping for similar results using the randomly bent, but hopefully suitable, exhaust pipe I picked up recently.
Looking to maybe use card tube template in the first case before cutting into the pipe and it'll be a onetime chance to get it right!!
How did you manage templates?

I've used foam plumbing lagging tube in recent years ! Once I'm happy with the shape / bend I reinforce it to keep the shape with welding rod / metal coat hangers !

Then I offer up whatever stock bends I've got to get the nearest simple solution. I use mandrel bends - 180 degree, 120 degree, 90 degree. I made all my system using these stock bends. MS or Stainless and not expensive.

I suffer because I'm not a welder, so the big issue for me is holding all the lengths together until they are tacked ! I normally insert a piece of the same foam lagging inside 2 adjacent bends and gaffer tape it all together.

Bit of down time there ....... blame Coronavirus or at least the threat thereof.

Actually just a bad dose of Man Flu ... and we ALL know how bad that is guys - right ?

I assumed that the flu might lead to the dreaded CV ..... but NO - the initial symptoms are very high fever / temperature and a persistent dry cough. On all the advice here in the UK they don't emphasise that, so loads of peeps like me think they might have it and clog the system up. Ahhh well, at least our NHS 111 dial in service was very efficient.

So, back in harness now. The seat has had another skim of filler and will be flatted off after the weekend then I think I'm ready for primer filler and eventually get a coat of the Metallic Silver on to see if it is the right shade or not.

My pal Brian has ordered a mig welder so he can tack up / weld the exhaust, just so frustrating waiting for peeps to come round and tack it up ... then don't show.

I've sold the original 1976 engine that came with the bike [ I have an excellent '82 ] so that will release funds to get the race engine built. Apart from any internal machine work that might be needed I have all the parts I need for the rebuild so this year should see the final stretch. I have a spare cylinder head that will be twin plugged [ yes I already have one ]., but this time I'm using a 10mm second plug.

It's great that friends will offer to help....but the ability to do it myself would be better....and save time. I don't have a lathe or experience to use one, shame....but for my very limited need I cannot justify the cost or space.
Progress is progress....I've also been struck lazy/listless with a terrible cold....a regaular snot maching I've been this past month and energy levels at empty tbh.
Carry on beachy :)

Another small step. The new "Shortie" silencer has been offered up - and discarded !

So it's back to the megaphone.

That's now been mocked up and the good news is that with the stock bends I have, we can make up the relevant positioning of both pipes and silencer.

Just one bit of CV downtime .... the new MIG welder was delivered to my house ... and my pal Brian is in a 12 weeks lockdown as being at high risk - 5 miles away ! Even then he has to keep up isolation, so I'll probably leave the welder in his porch when the 12 weeks is up.

Here's the final POC for the two system options.

The bulk of the bends and silencer will be hidden by the side panel, so it's just a case now of offering both systems up in place and seeing which one looks the best. From a practical standpoint both will physically fit in the space allotted which will be parallel to the seat and tight on the left hand side frame rails in order to clear the tyre / fuel filler system.

Somehow the tube inverted itself before the pic was taken for the Mega installation !! The shortie layout is correct.

Need to see it in place to gauge how they'll look.....the lobster can has to be in the correct angle/position to benefit from it's shape, the shortie can be a bit more versatile IMO

Absolutely - that's why I'm not going to make a decision until they are offered up. I'm leaning towards the Lobster can, but as you say the angle of the dangle has to be spot on otherwise it will look like a dog's dinner. The shortie is more versatile and probably needs to be horizontal whereas the Lobster will need the main can angled up for the outlet to look correct. As ever I can see it in my mind . In the meantime we've dismantled the right hand pipe from the engine ready to have the weld filled and dressed.

HELP .... any of my UK based DTT pals. My pal Brian will not be able to put the required build up weld on the header pipe [ 2 spots ] so that we can get it looking as one single piece of tube. There's no rush as I have to retrieve the header from Brian's house as and when.

Thanx to Titan Racing of this parish I now have the chance to get the header welded by their ace MIG guy - Ross Twyman.

I thank all of you for offering - what a worldwide brotherhood we have here.
