Teardown + Paint + Rebuild = Perfect 1980 Cb650

Hello everyone,

I recently started a new project with a 1980 Cb650c. The bike is black and in desperate need of new paint and a real solid cleaning. Her name "Bufonda"... the previous owner named her and I promised to keep the name in order to purchase the bike for a better price. She was not running right when I bought her and she has about 20,000 miles. I have been posted some of the tear down on YouTube (click here to view). I plan on posting more of the cleaning and painting process. I have tore the bike down to the frame and will be painting the engine, exhaust, carbs, and basically all of the chrome. I plan on painting the tank a desert tan and putting on a dark brown flat seat. I have never done a bike modification, so testing my ability and skill in this project. I am hoping and praying that all the time and effort pays off with a gorgeous build. Any suggestions from anyone more experienced let me know!

Looks like a solid starting point.
That frame can be a bit tricky to get the look right with different seats because of the drop in the middle

I have not done anything with the seat yet. I can see what you mean with the drop in the middle. Have you found any ways to get around that and still get that flat almost cafe style seat look?

I've heard of anyone requiring someone to keep the name of their bike the same for purchase. HAHA. That's pretty interesting.

Haha it was one of the more interesting negotiations I had been a part of!

As you are about to find out, that dohc step frame is one of the more difficult things to deal with on those bikes .... because they simply arent as popular. So less seat choices, less ideas etc.

It depends on what you are doing with the rear, but texavina makes some good seats for these frames at around $200 USD.

Other alternative is custom, which is what I'm doing for the same frame .... but considering the work already, $200 is well worth it.
