The 70 cc Father Son Build - test ride success

Well, I broke down and finally got the adapter to check compression on the China clone bike I scored last fall as a father son project. It was missing a few things but it was almost free. We tore the bike down to mostly parts and it sat for 6 months or so, but last night I put the tester on the motor and cranked it by hand with the kicker, 3 cranks and it hit 120 psi with the motor rolling all over the bench, that is good enough for me to spend a few $$ on the parts needed to put it back together. Since it is going to be my sons bike, he will be doing as much of the work as he can and it may take a while, but he told me it had to posted on DTT. He has his patch on one of his shirts and wears it all the time. He met a bunch of DTT folks at Barber and can't wait to show off his motorcycle. Being a Dirt bike I figured it could fit in the tracker section. I will get some pics up tonight.

Cheers,

Re: The 50CC Father/Son Build

Mr. Magoo will be pleased you guys are watching. I went home at lunch to switch car for bike, it's 55 deg so warm enough for riding ;D (it was 30 this morning) Tried to get a pic but the phone sucks in the Garage, lighting is crap. I will take some shots outside tonight with him after I pick him up from daycare on the 450.

Re: The 50CC Father/Son Build

Well Mr. Magoo worked for a good hour with one of his buddy's with SOS pads and got most of the rust off the wheels and spokes. He was happy with the results and it showed him what some elbow grease can accomplish. Hope to get at it some more on the weekend after we go and do some work to try and get the house sold. I have a parts list I need to print out that we will go over and see what is missing and then scrounge the internet for anything we need.

Cheers,

Re: The 50CC Father/Son fired up!

Well mocked up the suzuki tank cause it is good. Put fresh gas in after installing the freshly cleaned carb and 2 kicks and it fired right up! Fresh oil etc. Wont idle yet but that will be sorted. Now that we know it runs we will kick into hi gear and get r done. Pick.

We may make the suzi tank work becauae the ds will be in bits for a while. Brake cable and some small bits and he will be riding!

Re: The 50CC Father/Son Build

I spent a few minutes looking and I think I can make the suzi tank fit with little mods. I can bolt the rubber gromets for the front and then put a piece in the back to hold that on. That moves us one big step closer to riding. I also think I can use the lever and brake cable from the suzi. It will be a hozuki when we are done. ;D

Re: The 50CC Father/Son Build

Got the tank mounted with a little work, should be fine. I went to mount the chain and noticed the master link is busted so I need to get one of those. I can't remember how the wheel went back on if there was spacers etc. and the parts fiche I have is blurry on that page, I am going to just try and see what it takes to get lined up with the front sprocket and go from there. It should be ready for a test ride after I air up tires and see if they leak or not. After that we can rip it back apart for final clean up and paint and I need to see if I can scrounge up something for a front fender and brake lever and we should be ready to ride! May just pirate from the Suzi again.

I went out to tinker tonight and my son came out so we got the bike put together enough to ride it down the driveway. Went in gear and rode so we now know it is worth getting it done comletely I actually got it to idle. no brakes yet, the lever and cable are too big from the suzi so I may just get the fender off anf then order a brake lever and line. Fuel line leaks like a sieve so we will get that too. will likely be end of the month or mid july before we get the parts so we will strip it back down and finish clean up and paint and it will be good to go. He was happy! Oh and we found out the motor is a 70 so I had to correct the title ;D
