The 'leftovers' project - XS650

Beautiful project man. I'll definitely be following this one. The welds on that frame are phenomenal, and your choice of color is superb. I would also like to voice my support of a nickel-plated frame. ;D

Bought myself a Christmas present :)

I was faced with taking my engine apart, to fix the leaky tappet covers (stripped studs - irreparable). It's the same problem that lead me to build the 750cc rephased ported head monster engine I have in my café.

So, still facing that problem, I stumbled across a couple eBay auctions :) Bought an XS1 cam with the later model 36 tooth sprocket pressed on. The XS1 cam is a lumpier higher performance cam and with the proper sprocket on it is now compatible with the later model engines.

The same seller had a ported head :D All prepped, ground and polished tappets, valve tips etc. 3 angle valve grind, polished/ported, etc. etc. And the camshaft comes with a copper gasket which is cool and fresh roller bearings in the ends for the advance mechanism.

Made a deal on both. Saves me from taking my spare head to the machine shop for a standard valve job and cleanup. Probably cost $250 more than that would have cost but I'm getting a ported head, good anti friction coatings and the lumpy XS1 camshaft for that extra money.

Not as nutty as my 750cc engine but nice moderate performance upgrades which is perfect for this bar hopper.

Pics to follow. Merry Christmas!

Oh, this engine will be mild compared to the other one (really, I should just pull that motor and use it in this bike as only one will be on the road at a given time, but I just can't bring myself to do that).

Should be a nice aggressive sound and a decent performance bump :) Should have the parts in the next few days. Need to tear down the other engine quickly and get the cases bead blasted (might have these new parts bead blasted at the same time to have it all uniform), slide on the taller 5th gear I have for it and put it back together with fresh seals and Threebond.

Of course still sorting out the C95 whilst all this is going on.

Picked up the head and cam today and finished tearing the engine apart. Ready for soda blasting :)

Will move the project out of the house into the garage so I can put the engine in the frame and start sorting out footpegs, seat mounts, tank etc.

The engine is dismantled - ready to go for soda blasting. The pistons are likely going to be replaced (posted in the 1-800 section - bad scoring).

Just need to make room in the garage so I can put the MK4 in there with the engine in the frame. My home office is getting crowded and smelly. Will just keep the C95 in there.

Gotta go take a welding course and buy a welder so I can tack on my own various mounts.

'Bout time slacker! Looking good buddy. I'm jealous of your engines.

Found a guy offering TIG lessons for noobs :) Figure I might as well jump in with both feet.

Found him on Kijiji. Not cheap, but about the same as the 6 hour MIG course at Centennial. Haven't found anything between the 1 day 6 hour session at Centennial and a multi-year $1000's certification course.

He's also a rider - working on an XS650 it turns out. I figure I'll spend a few hours getting familiar with TIG, and then either plunk down for a TIG outfit (which will run well north of $1,000 for a cheap kit) or buy a MIG setup for a few $100 and play with it.

First and foremost I want to be able to tack brackets etc. on my Voodoo frame, and then I can take it to a pro for final TIG welding. But longer term I'd like to be able to weld properly, so if nothing else I can do it for fun and help people out locally.

On another topic - I'm thinking about this tank for the bike. Just thinking out loud.

Nice tank... But kind of plain Jane. Such a cool and interesting frame, I feel like something with a bit more jazz to it would be more fitting.
