Thanks a heap for posting all the new regulation details, as you said I think it's wise to check my state laws, but for all intensive purpose, it seems they've finally done away with the rear guard rule nationally which is fantastic!

Now that that's been resolved, back to an earlier question. I know at least one of you guys has ditched the air box and shoved some pods on. I would love to do the same but I'm guessing its still not allowed and no reforms on that have come along recently.

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, Id love to be wrong! but until someone does, its an air box for me.

I don't know if there is a specific ADR for motorcycles using air filters. I know there is one for vehicles prohibiting them from using pod filters that are oiled for EFI cars and an outright ban on carby engines.

http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2008C00324

The only thing I could see for air filters would be the noise it produces and assuming that your motorcycle is not puffing black smoke due to an excessive fuel ratio (which means it was tuned right) and is below the exhaust noise decibel limit (approx. 95 db - 94 db to be exact with a leeway of 1db as it would drown out any induction noise), I doubt you would have concerns. I have read through the vehicle standards PDF concerning motorcycles for SA and there is no mention of anything about air filters at all. See below link

https://www.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0019/19153/MR808-Motorcycle-and-Sidecars-11.14.pdf

Below is the ADR list if you want to go through it. As you will see the ones with the X mark are those applicable to your type of vehicle depending on category. Your Ace being 125cc would fall under the LC catergory. As you can see, no mention of air filters or restrictions on type of air filters at all...

Hope this helps. :)

Hey there xristianos,

Yeah I stumbled across those myself a little earlier in the day but came to the conclusion, reading from the first law you quoted, that it concerns vehicles as a whole, and therefore would include motorcycles as well. I admit I did find the wording a little car-centric when it came to the EFI part, and I too found no LC ADR listing concerning filters.

I seem to find mixed reviews from what other forum topics have said.

Queensland was kind enough to make a FAQ concerning vehicle mods and stated in this document that pod filters are A OK given certain standards are met
"http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Vehicle-standards-and-modifications/Vehicle-modifications/Frequently-asked-questions-vehicle-standards-and-modifications.aspx"

A Victoria FAQ dated 2006 had this to say (pretty much word for word what you have already stated) which seems at least to me to be a no-go for pod filters
http://www.epa.vic.gov.au/~/media/Publications/1031%201.pdf

I will try post the others when the Vicroads site has finished undergoing maintenance. I remember 1 or 2 more concerning the topic

Overall I found the same things you listed, concerns are, oil soaked filters can catch fire so none of them, better air intake can result in more bang for your buck in terms of fuel air mix ratio, sounds good but then emission standards can be a problem. And of course noise level may increase so to be aware of that.

Still would love to have something REALLY solid concerning the matter, I think I should just email some mechanics and/or someone from Vicroads, get a definite answer.

Thanks a heap for going through all the boring shit with me xristianos! It really is boring and I appreciate it a lot. I'm going to do some more digging and hopefully I will have that definite answer soon!

Hey Son,

No probs. I enjoy doing this sort of thing. I'm formerly from DPTI (Transport SA) hence why I get excited by ADR's. ;D

As for the solid evidence, I doubt there would be any that would declare YAY or NAY. One can only assume that the air filter and taking off of air boxes is currently unregulated in terms of motorcycles up to an extent (noise regulation).

Cars have a very different rules hence I don't think the air filter rules for 'motor vehicles' (interpreted as cars) is applicable. An example would be the EPA restriction of no venting direct to atmosphere of crankcases yet most motorbikes do. Just look at the Ace (was it? mine only has a rubber tube)

I say unregulated because the motorcycle ADR guidelines has no specific requirements/restrictions in place for it in terms of materials used/etc. That is, till someone abuses the thing and then it gets regulated.... :-X

Put it this way - if you can't find a law/ADR online via google that addresses the issue, I doubt any enforcement agency would be able to. One of the requirements for enforcement of rules and regulataions (in terms of vehicle compliance) is that it be available to the public at no cost and is easily available for verification. That is unless there are States laws as then the point is moot as ADR's will be supplanted by local statutes.

Hope this helps.

Summer's here!

acecafe found these on AliExpress, so we made a group buy:

The 'Ace' gets a bit hot when ridden for extended periods at full throttle (is there any other way?), so this will help.

It should be fairly easy to fit an oil cooler …

That looks good, do you have a part number and price available. Also do you have it fitted yet?

Hey Chris,

Looks like when I get some free time i'll be removing that airbox then! You make a point that's pretty hard to argue with. I have been looking for days and I still can't find any LC regulations concerning the issue, so if it is out there, my local government hasn't been very forthcoming in letting the public know. Case closed.

Cheers

Hey Crazy,

That looks great! Please post a pic once you're done, love to see what it looks like, but I think I might get one regardless. For other people looking for it, I think this is the one Crazy has bought:

Currently contacting the seller to ask if they have the black parts in stock. I know most of you you have silver engines but will post if he replies in case anyone one else wants a black one, or for future reference

Nice one, let us know how you fit it

Is fitting one of these advisable for SE QLD weather? Has there been a problem with overheating in your area?

Or is it just being proactive??

The mounting provided with the cooler is woefully inadequate, so it had to be replaced.

With no workshop and no access to machine tools, any brackets had to be fabricated using hand tools.

Made a couple of prototypes out of MDF but neither worked. They interfered with some part of the bike or looked clumsy or both.

Version three seemed possible, so after sawing, drilling and filing some aluminium I ended up with this:

Hey Crazy,

Thanks for posting a picture of your fabricated parts. I'm guessing when I get my oil cooler I will have to do the same. Like you I have limited tools so its great to see a work around for it. Keep us posted

anyone who still wants an oil cooler with a radiator guard of some sort should check this out. Pretty much the same unit as the one Crazy posted, with a guard as well.

Finished plumbing the oil cooler Friday afternoon, took it for a test run through The Royal on Saturday!

Started seeping oil during the ride, but re-torquing the bolts fixed that.

Took some photos today:
