Time for a new project - '76 RD400

The Wrecking Crew
DTT BOTM WINNER
I found a great deal on a pretty stock RD400 while I was building the 360 so I snatched it up. Mechanically it's pretty sound, the owner just made some cosmetic decisions that I think are in bad taste (IT'S FREAKIN' YELLOW!) Plus, who doesn't like clip-ons and rearsets? ;D So, it's time for a quick cafe job on this smoking beast.

Here's the photos from when I first got her, progress photos are on the way. I've painted the rims with appliance epoxy as well as disassembled the front end for paint on the fork legs, clip ons, headlight bracket, mini gauges and new grips. Other plans include a new seat, paint, chop all the crap behind the seat, throwing away of ugly things and rear sets. Also scored a brand new DG exhaust for $210. 8)

Progress:
Painted wheels and fork lowers
Installed DG exhaust
Installed clipons

The clipons are way too short. My controls hang about 2 inches over the edge. Time for a different set. I also need to build a bracket for the mini gauges.

CafeMatty and TheProspector came and had a few beers while I put the exhaust on. Here's the first run up the street with the new exhaust.

RD400 and DG Exhaust - First Run

Update: Got rear sets, threw on some clubmans I had in the garage. Waiting on new clip ons, need to mount the gauges and waiting on a seat. Going to have to heat/bend the kick lever to clear the new rear set.

I can smell the smoke from here, man. Mmmm, two stroke.

You're doing it right when after riding people ask if you've been doing yard work.

That looks killer, man. The rearsets you're running look really well made. Oh, and thanks a heap for swapping for that brake hose. It worked a treat! Hope the clipons work as well for you.

Sweet bike man! The yellow is bright but not too bad. Im still new to bike and not very familiar with 2 stroke stuff but from what Ive seen here they are increadable. Awesome work!

Thanks! The yellow will be gone as soon as possible.

Personally I think the yellow would look just fine if it had the period black decals.
Those rearsets look great, do you have a picture of the gearshift side?

^ im not sure if your asking me or not. im not gonna hijack so there is pictures of my 350 in show an shine i think

im just yellow representing haha its a yamaha it should be yellow a 70s mult cyl 400cc 2stroke it is gonna stand out it needs to be bonkers get the correct 400 decals it will look great

Just never been a big yellow fan. Don't worry guys, I have a few ideas. Should be hot.

I've been slacking. Hard. Anyway, got back out to the garage this afternoon and made some progress. Removed the stock airbox and installed a y boot/K&N filter. Worked a bit more on how I'm going to mount the seat. I think I'm going to move the battery box forward, which will allow for the oil filler neck to slide down and give me a lower mounting surface. Also, I may need to notch the seat for the oil dipstick or shorten the dipstick.

Travis stopped by last night and we took some measurements for a laser cut gauge mount. Well, Travis took measurements - I drank Captain 100 proof and watched.

Here's how she sits:

TODO:
Order and install custom length brake line
Mount gauges and reassemble front end
Find smaller battery and build mount
Move oil filler neck
Notch seat for dipstick
Mount seat
Make seat pan/upholster seat pan
PAINT!!!

Cool bike one of my favorites. I also prefer the standard 400 tank to the Daytona, and good for you on a non-yellow Yamaha, enough already with the bumble-bee look. Two strokes are the rear drive car of the bike world. By that I mean what was once commonplace is now getting collectable regardless if it was a hot item back in it's day or not. They aren't being made much any more maybe KTM.
Cheers, 50gary
