valve cover bolts

Been Around the Block
Hi all,
Was resetting the valves on my oil cooled suzuki 750 yesterday and stripped the threads from where the bolts go through the cover. I know that rethreading is an option, but I'd prefer to simply replace the part with the threads gone...my question is......what is this part called.

I know my description is a bit confusing so I'm trying to find a pic. The 8 bolts pictured in the pic, 1 one those stripped the threads from where it inserts into the valve cover........

just got to cmsnl.com and type in your model number and look at the parts fische

Pretty sure they bolt into the cam caps - which are line bored with the head to match up the correct clearance for the cams.

In other words, you shouldn't replace them with ones from another head or put them in the wrong order (they are numbered).

Get them Helicoiled.

And the reason why those bolts strip? Old gaskets and old rubbers under the bolts. They start to weep oil so people think they can snug up the bolts a bit.....

yep, found that out when stripping down my Z750 head, had to helicoil 7 stripped threads, 3 separate cam caps and 4 cam cover holes. also 1 stripped chain tensioner bolt. Luckily an easy job, all were found with the motor out of the frame.

And a good tip before you try and remove the cam cap bolts - get a flat punch and give all the bolts a good whack square on their heads before you try and remove them.

If you snap one of those bolts off you're in much deeper water.

Thanks for the help. Now can anyone tell e what size helicoils I need to get?

Yes, the same size as the bolts. Match the size and thread pitch.

Thanks...just took one to the machine shop. You'd be surprised at what you guys consider small issues that are big deals when u live on a small island. Hopefully I'll be back on the road in a few weeks.
Thanks for the help guys.

looking at the pics, id say 10mm, x1.0 pitch. You can buy kits in that size for around 35 dollars here in Sydney. my 6mmx1.0 cost me 24.95 AUD of course.

Also they are a fairly fine pitch thread (from memory) which makes them easier to strip if they are overtightened.
