Vintage VW folks...

Ha! GEX...don't waste your money.

Chinese parts, unported heads, cam too small (unless it's for a Bus), no exhaust, no sump, no full flow...I could go on and on. And "rebuilt", too. Most of the stuff is just used parts. GEX is a joke.

My '63. 2,276cc with 48 IDA's. Dyno proven 190HP/190TQ. Berg 5 speed. You WILL spend more than $5K to do it right.

It depends on the builder for sure. That is always the case. Usually you have to get above 2100 cc's to get into that price range. We ran basically the same engine. Mine was a 2275cc built by Bernie Bergmann. His engines are in the $7 to $8K range. If you can do it yourself, it will not cost more than $5K.

BTW, love the Empi 5 spokes. Those are my favorite rims.

Those are BRM's.

A good set of heads will cost $550 (on the low end) and up. Carbs are $500-1200. That's nearly half the budget right there.

Just realized I may have come across like a d!ck. That wasn't my intention. I've built a lot of VW's since back in the '90's. Like any hobby, there are a million ways to do things. If you want to race (i.e., break parts), it ain't cheap.

I learned a long time ago to take Gene Berg's advice: Cry once and buy the best.

BRM's are Empi. They introduced that wheel in the mid 60's. It was originally 90% magnesium, extremely light but fragile and prone to corrosion within a day or two. You wouldn't want the original magnesium Empi BRM's. Or at least I wouldn't. Most tracks won't let you run them and they're impossible to keep in good shape.

BRM = British Racing Motors. EMPI was a distributor/importer of the BRM. Mine are aluminum FlatFour versions, early style.

This is what I think if when you say EMPI 5 spoke.

My wife wants a classic Bug so bad but there's basically nothing around me, just like with bikes. /sigh

A good friend of mine is in his 60s and has a Single Cab project he's about to start fixing back up. His idea is that if I help, it's half mine. So... I suppose I'll just dive into that and see where it goes. Ha...

I got ya. That makes sense. Those wheels replaced your version. British Racing Motors was never the manufacturer of your wheel. That was a British Formula I race team. Graham Hill and Dan Gurney were both drivers for BRM. They went on to start Speedwell. That's where the name BRM comes from. In the 60's your BRM wheel was manufactured by Speedwell Enterprises and EMPI offered them through a relationship with Speedwell. Joe Vittone of EMPI designed and manufactured a camber compensator for for Gurney's cars. Not long after that, Speedwell and EMPI shared manufacturing rights and distribution for many parts, including the BRM wheels. Speedwell covered sales for the UK and Europe, while EMPI gave them distribution in the US.

That same hipster tax got put on PBR. DAMN IT!

1972 Super, lowered, Empi wheels, 1/2 of the interior already replaced with black instead of the ugly factory tan/cream, 4 tires with maybe 400 miles on them, sitting in the barn. Father in law got conned out of the 2332cc twin carb it had for power when he bought it. Now has a 1968 standard engine in it. Berg shifter, no idea if it has a Berg transaxle or not. Still has the warranty card in the driver's booklet. Needs some chrome polishing, tires aired up, a new battery, and a couple minor dings taken out of the rear fenders.

Husqvarna/Stihl orange color. Moon roof crank gear is stripped so it doesn't open. Has a dorky tow bar on the front frame/bumper.

Gonna sit there and rot until the father in law is deceased. He bought the car for me in 1999, never gave me the paperwork, got conned out of the good engine and the 68 engine donor runner/roller/driver, and won't let me get the 72 (my birth year) back in service while the title is in his name...

Gave away the 63 Honda, quit the PBR (last 1/2 rack is still in the fridge from November).

Car last licensed in 2006 when he drug it down to the coast behind his RV while working on his Katrinafied vacation house on the MS coast. Come to think of it, 413/727 Dodge M400 full custom motorhome last licensed in 2006 as well...

I have a '75 I need to sell. Light blue with white/blue interior. Body is pretty straight. Clear coat is peeling. Interior is good. Runs and drives. Yes, it is a fuel injected simi auto. $2k. In NC

Being an old airhead I will say it's truly silly to not want heat lol. My last was a 62 which is somewhere in OKC now. If you were to ask me what engine I would do if I did it again, it would be a 2110 or a 1776 with a semi aggressive cam. I also like many aircooled guys had the itch for hi-power so building a good strong streetable engine is key, I think the 2110 built with the right parts would be ideal for both fun and daily. Although a well buuild 1776 will do more than enough to get out of it's own way. Both are same bore just different stroke for those who don't know. I like keeping as much cylinder wall as possible :)

Now as for the talk of price, I sold mine for 8k 2 years ago and would have taken anything less. You can however find them for 3-5k as good strong runners needing nothing. Obviously you can take the time to build for less however if you are looking for a daily I would assume you would need it to be good to go right out of the box. Check out thesamba if you haven't already Doc.
