XS250 cafe burner

SO, i have been sick for a week or so. but still managed to make some progress.

i have completely cleaned the frame, degreased and wire brushed it, all the way down so it was prepped for some etching!
hung it up in the garage and gave it it's first layer! ;D but i need to get myself a mask because right now i feel like i have a whole can of primer down my throat. when it was drying i moved on to cleaning and prepping the swing arm, but one question........

HOW DO YOU GET THE FRIKKEN BUSHES OUT?????!!!! im pulling/hammering/levering and nothing! i just dont want to use too much force and do some damage.... is there a proper procedure?? oh and the bushes are pretty mush stuffed now, cracked and shite.

please help!

Good work so far, will be lookin' flash with that golden frame!

The bushes should come out more easily if you heat the casings, you'll need a blowtorch. Be careful not to mess anything vital up, though.

Cheers - boingk

PS: Go the Aussies! ;D

looks pretty good...

that engine needs some work- It sounds like its either running wayyyy rich or one of the pistons isnt firing properly. That would explain the hesitation.

But hey... least it starts first kick ;) ;) ;) ;)

sure is, a bit of a mixture of both! haha, well the over richness actually caused the LH cyl to fail/hesitate because the black sootyness had fouled the spark plug.

a statement in the manual reads that the xs250/360/400 are identical, bar the components that relate to its cc's. throw in some xs400 jugs and pistons, VOILA 27hp to 37hp! onlookers and the johnny law will still think its a 250 because the crank case and frame stampings are still original ;) aye aye?

and yes the stroke in all three engines are the same, the cam profiles are the same etc. what do you think??? is it worth a try?

so the front bar i have sanded and cleaned and sanded and cleaned, but not matter what i do it keaps on BLOODY BUBBLING!!! i got fed up and will continue it tomorrow. hope you like

oh thats awesome! hope you like them mate.

i want to do it as quickly as i can (on my own) as its the only bike i have and hate having downtime. but for most or pretty much all my motavation comes from this very forum, and i put out a huge thank you to everyone who shares and provides us with ideas and skills.

so my goals for this week is to have the swing arm done (but will have to wait for new bushes, oh and part number is the same as xs650, so a nice set of brass ones from mikesxs, or i have seen a roller bearing kit for about $250AUD is it worth the upgrade???) and also complete the forks with appliance satin black and a set of gaitors.

thanks guys

modak on elizabeth st have a variety of gaitor sizes as well. around $30, and grumpy service

I KNOW! i've always droolled at the shop front, and went in one day, with a grumpy old couple behind the counter, shrugged me off and completely ignored my pressence in their store! man i dont think ill be going there again! theres another store in punchbowl called trojan, they have all old norton/bsa/triumph parts as well as assorted cafe/vintage parts.

Hey man I'm glad you liked that Richmond cafe racer link, i was just looking over you build nice stuff its always nice to have a wk shop aye!! that motorcycle wreckers your talking about wouldn't happen to be Vic Motorcycle Wreckers would it? Heidelberg West Mologa St? Just happens to be just around the corner from my work home base too, They are the biggest in Vic.... there is a heap of great companies to deal with around this area, i was sorting them all out for a year before i started my build. Sandblaster/powder coater (master blaster), fabricators (Henlor engineering), Machinists (Baker Engineering) Painters (Ellis panel works) plus bolt and bearing joints on waterdale road,,,, so many good suppliers and all good to deal with no grumpy buggers..... ;D

thanks mate, ;D thats the one! very nice people at vic wreckers. good to see you have done the research, im fresh from WA so i wouldnt know where to start looking for the best deals on parts etc. i live in pascoe vale south and work in thomastown, still learning the suburbs and strengthening my bearings of victoria. i was thinking whether or not i should get a few bits and pieces blasted and PCed like enginemounts etc, but figured it would be cheaper to clean and spray myself, although i still need to find a good place for wiring when i re-wire this thing and aluminium sheeting for my battery & electrics/seat mount. thanks for all the info! :D

No worries man, i basicly had the hole bike less the engine and the wheels powder coated by the guys imensioned for $220, cash and if you need help with your wiring im a wizz, ive spent about 9 years doing auto electrics. For the alloy bits you want done Mike @ Henlor is the man the are just down from Vic MC wreckers on the same side of the st on the corner.......

sweet deals! thanks for the offer buddy, deffinatly will hit you up when i hit a brick wall with the wiring. :p

im spraying more parts as we speak... so stay tuned! 8)

What are you using for spraying? General consensus on my main bike forum seems to be '2pac'.

Also, whereabouts in Perth were you from? I'm in Parkwood, near Canning Vale/Cannington, SOR.

im using appliance enamel for frame and bits and septone engine paint all from supercheap, oh and i grew up in swan view then moved to thornlie, maylands now melbourne!. its all coming out great so far! thanks for the tip on heating up the swing arm bushings, they popped right out! finally overcame the bubbling on the frame, its back to a fresh coat of primer and ready to be layed on tomorrow with more gold!

i really have to settle down and not be so excited when progressing on the bike, i tend to be in auto-mode and forget where i put things or spray things without properly cleaning them!

now this is the only part of the engine that will be polished (apart from little highlights like badging and points cover), the rest is in high temp flat black. i was pretty indisicive as whether to just go all black, but if i go this way it will be easier if i change my mind. man the grime on this think was like 5mm thick all over took a whole can of degreaser on its own!

pretty flukey on the holes with the sprocket cover, didnt mark em out or measure them but i think they turned out alright.

i was contemplating on rebuilding the forks, i tested the spring rate in them, one seems to me smoother than the other but not by much. i didnt have the tools or the patience to tear them apart so they got sprayed also ;D

Evening, someones been burning the candle of "I cant wait and longer" ( LOL :D ) i was just thinking when you were at Vic MC wreck did you meet a guy out the front riding a honda 600 motard and have a chat with him about places to go dirt bike riding? cause if you did weve already met LOL.... If not, its still funny that we live 15mins apart (now) and ended up finding that out on a cafe site from the other side of the globe LOl...

Any how, that paints looking slick, i used 3 coateds of etch primer then 3 coats of topcoat then 2 coats of clear and it came out sweet, how are you finding that appliance gear, i had noticed other crew from this site had various issues with it? the gold looks mean, what color are you thinking for the tins and wheel, Cheers Andycafe
