YZF750/1000R - The Fly 5

Stock sprocket ratio is 16F/43R. I decided to have a couple sprocket ratios available for the bike. I'll have 15,16,17 options for the front and 43/45/47 for the rear. I'm leaning towards 15/45 for our smallish track out here. I'm thinking the stock ratio is too tall.

Still need to dig through my storage for those disks. I've had rethink on the brake mods for now I'll do new lines and refresh on the stock calipers and install the new front rotors. The blue dot caliper mod to the stock forks needs a few more components I'll collect for later. Hopefully I'll save myself some time for other things that need attention.
The front wheel on this bike has a pretty big dent. I'll swap it with one from my hoard. I'll want to paint the wheels instead of going with the current "survived the wasteland" patina.

The Shinko 009 slicks arrived. I've never run race tires before and honestly, I know I didn't really 'need' them for trackdays but it gave me the excuse. The Dunlop GPR 300's I put on the survivor YZF would work well I'd bet. I'm even looking at good used tire warmers. Horse before the cart.

I'm still waiting on the 45 tooth rear sprocket and the new SS lines for the brakes. Shipping times are whack right now.

I have an extra primary drive sprocket cover that I'd like to cut down a bit and see about fitting up the cable operated clutch conversion I have. The converted clutch cable routing is a trick so I'll mock it up when I get a chance.

With slicks you really have to have tire warmers to get them up to working temperatures. If you ride on them cold, they don't have as much grip.

That's what I've read so I'm keeping an eye out looking for a set. Thanks for the confirmation.

I thought the Shinko slicks were intended for drag racing, not roadracing/trackdays. Have they changed that recommendation? I have never seen them at the track. I would be very leery of using them. Metzler and Bridgestone make trackday slicks that can be used without warmers. I suspect they will last longer and be stickier than most people need, compared to race specific slicks. I race on the Bridgestone DOT tires and don't use warmers. I am putting the Bridgestone slicks on next but only because they last longer than the DOTs. I am sure they will not help me go any faster since there are lots of riders faster than I am on the same DOT tires.

Dual race use they say. I suppose you could drag race with them although I'd find a flatter profile tire for drags. These have the profile of any other round race slick I've seen. Shinko 008's.
From their own description:
"Recommended for drag race and short course, track day use only.
  • Completely slick, soft compound tread
  • Radial construction
  • Aramid belted
  • Excellent Super Moto tire"
I'll find some tire warmers before I go out to the track with them. I won't be the fast guy out there either but I've always wanted to try warmed up race tires. I didn't know about the non warmer Metzlers or Bridgestones you mentioned. There is a tire guy at the track with good deals on Continental and Dunlops (I think it's those two brands) so I'll likely go through him when I'm done with these. I'm looking forward to wearing out some tires this summer.

"Short course" is oval track, typically. Looks to me like these are drag and super moto oval track tires by that description.

I think that Continental also has some track day slicks available now. Conti is catering more to the older bike vintage crowd, so I would be surprised if they didn't have a good tire for your bike. If there is a Dunlop/ Conti vendor at the track, I would really look at using them since he will be available to give advice as to pressures and temp expectations.
It looks like the Shinkos may have changed since last I looked at them but I would still be very careful going out on them the first time. If it was me, I wouldn't use them on the track, I would sell them to a drag racer or keep them and go to the strip.

I think that "Short course" means, don't run them hard all day because they will overheat. Run them and test the tire temperature and pressure rise to be sure after each outing.

From prior posts, I suspect that they were intended for drag use and that suggests that the rear at least may have flexible sidewalls. Good for launch but not so good for hard road race conditions.

So I've decided to pass on those shinkos for the track. Thanks for all the input. I haven't ruled out taking it to the dragstrip sometime. Right now, the rear has a good Conti Motion that's only about 4 years old and nice tread left so I'm just going to run it. It's not ideal so we'll see. I'll get another something for the front soon. I pulled a nice front wheel with good stock rotors off the #4 parts bike. The black front wheel and yellow rear wheel combo is staying. Waiting on another 45T rear sprocket, I was sent one that didn't fit and the seller is not responding. A few other bits on the way, shipping times are still longer than usual, especially on things I should have ordered a week or more ago like new sintered brake pads.....

I had to pull a good rear caliper and rebuild it from the #4 bike as well. The rear brakes pads were loooong gone and the caliper was frozen hard.

Not a great pic but my wife adopted a little blonde husky mix girl pup. Her and Zed are hilarious. I'm also doing more test fit up of the carbon fiber hugger and the fiberglass tail. This one uses the stock seat so it's pretty much already done. I loooove the other daytona style tail but it'll require a bit of alloy framework under the glass for support.

Ha, I just did a Pilot caliper that looked something like that.
Yeah, rebuilding brakes suuucks but it's great when it's all done. Finally got in the 45T rear sprocket so I put my torque wrench to good use and finished up the rear wheel. Need to find a compatible front tire. I'm still waiting on brake pads and a thing or two to wrap up the brakes, it's pretty close now. I also found that I had 6 nice caliper bolts so I went and drilled them for safety wire. A little at a time I'm getting stuff done.

I'd been waiting on a few things like the 16T supersprox front sprocket to arrive. The stock ratio being 16/43, I decided on 16T front and up two teeth in the rear to a 45. I have a 15T supersprox front if I decide to change the sprocket ratio to 3:1 later. I did all 520 components instead of the stock 530 chain/sprocket combos. There's a noticeable difference in the weight between 520 and 530 kits but I didn't weigh them. I put on a cool WoodCraft shark fin too. Maybe it'll save some toes or fingers on the track. As in the pic, I still need to finish setting the wheel/chain and alignment and pop off two links and rivet a new master with it all lined up tonight hopefully.

The Conti Sport Attack front tire arrived today and my new boots.
