I thought you were talking about building a "scoop" to force the air in your carbs. Just cutting the holes out and putting screens on isn't going to hurt anything. That will actually be quite a ways back from your stacks. You know the original screens just fit under the plastic "chromed" rim...

Joe....these "power" vents ain't gonna work. Someone mentioned it earlier, and he is right. There will be no way to jet the carb for the difference between wide open throttle at 10 mph vs wide open throttle at 80 mph when you are craming air in the carb. I think you should skip this step...

Unless you were going to do something radical like some street fighter, I really think that something close to the stock pipe would be the best. Somewhat "upswept", but not too much. Just my opinion. Megaphones are more for the 80's cruiser look, to me. The 70's look is what is doing it for...

Joe, I have an idea that I have not heard expressed here, yet. Take your engine side covers off (again) and fill in the 'YAMAHA' with JB Weld, then use some of that chrome powder on them. I think it would be kinda cool having a bike with only your brand on it. What say you? Mark from Arkansas
