400f splitting the case problems..

ronnie

Calm down and sail on
So I attempted to break open the crankcase so i could get the cam off and check out the vitals.. well all I have is a 350f manual with a small 400f supplement at the end that doesn't give much info on the topic.. I know I need yo get the books I know.. jeez chill.

OK so I tried to take them apart and it won't separate. I took off the stator and all the bolts are out, it cracks open but I think the crank chain is holding it on. How the hell do you get the top off the bottom to access the crank and cam chain?

Oh and I think the clutch assembly slide over cause its hanging out a little now and won't go back in and the cases won't close back together now

Bump for ya Ronnie.

I can't recall what holds them together.........something has to slide out sideways........sorry man.

Is the oil pump attached to the clutch like on the cb 350? If so then the oil pump and clutch need to come off first as the pump is on the bottom case and clutch is attached to the top case. Would explain your issue.

Also looks like the shift fork lever could be giving you grief. Why are you not removing any of the external components before opening the cases? Do you have a manual for it at all? I would have issues too had I not had that manual.

I don't believe the pump is with the clutch.. and what external parts are you referring to? The clutch assembly? Main sprocket? There's really not much on the outside, the stator is off. I don't have a manual for the 400 just the 350f but it has a 400f supplement in the back but it doesn't give a breakdown of the engine as its short. I'm offshore now so I'll order a manual for the 400 so it will be home when I get it..

Any preferred manuals? Clymers the best?

Clymers is good but I prefer the actual shop manual. It's helped me more. 350 anyways.

Main sprocket should be fine. I'm referring to clutch/oil filter/oil pump and the shifter linkage that has that hook on it. It's in the pic. As I recall the 350 manual goes step by step to remove all that shit before splitting the cases. Hope it helps.

Well that's the thing, the 350 manual just says take the stator off with tool then pull the lower off the upper... And it should come off. I'll get a clymers and a shop then.. as cheap as they are for the headaches they reduce.

The shift linkage, etc is going to have to come off. That hold the halves together. Pretty much all of the "side cover accessories" have to be removed and then they will pop right in half.

Mad science bitches!

PM me your e-mail addy and I will send you PDFs of the Honda factory parts and service manual, the right tools for the job.

Thanks again swan.. Yea I see it now. I definitely didn't have all of that off! Well another 3 weeks and I'll get to it haha.
