DOHC 750 guys, what exactly are our triple trees and steering stems made of, in regards to material. it's my understanding that there are a billion different flavors of steel, aluminum, and...alloy.

i ask because i have heard naughty things coming from using aluminum fasteners on steel parts and visa versa.

i'm in the market for a new steering nut (closed as opposed to my open one) and just want to make sure it's okay to be running an aluminum nut on something steel.

Use some antiseize, and go for it.

I change out everything I can for alloy, never have any issues.

thanks, i wasn't too sure plus as a steering component, i'm not trying to fuck up.

i got a crash course in copper based antiseize about 20 minutes ago and it looks like ill be going that route.

You shouldn't have any issues with the parts seizing due to the different metals (at least in this case - not at all true with other materials!), but ANY aluminum fastener is very frail with regard to tightening torque so be super careful. Generally any sort of anti-seize will amplify the ease with which you can damage the fastener. I don't use aluminum alloy fasteners for anything unless there is a specific engineering reason to do so. Trick is one thing, common sense another.

Aluminium and copper suffer from galvanic corrosion when in contact. Use some zinc or molybdenum based anti seize instead. Especially for stuff hanging out in the weather.
