bolt on upgrade for hockey puck caliper

Been Around the Block
I've got a 75 cb360 that has given me a lot of trouble with the front brake dragging. I ahve replaced the caliper twice, the pads three times and the master cylinder twice. It let me down again today and I nearly didn't make it home. I'm tired of fighting it. I want to replace it with something better. I was hoping one of you would know of a bolt on upgrade for the caliper. I found the master cylinder on mikes xs. I was hoping for a dual or four piston caliper, but I'll take what i can get. The bike will sit and rot until I fis the front brakes, so I need help fast.
Thanks

you can use the system from a newer cbr, but you'll have to find a way to adapt the caliper to the fork, as the cb forks were designed to hold the swinging caliper arm and the cbr was mounted solid with the caliper sliding on its mounts...

how is the brake dragging? just not releasing pressure after braking?

Yeah, I can pull the caliper off and compress the piston, bleed the line and it will work fine for less than a mile. the longer i drive the more it drags. yesterday i was closer to work than home so I decided to push on to work. I had drive in second gear to over come the drag. It's gotten worse over the last few weeks. It used to just drag a little and squeak and squeal a lot. Not it's much worse and i'm not going to drive it untill i can fix it.
I don't have access to milling machines. What's involved in the CBR upgrade?

I've been looking on ebay. will a front brake setup off a 89 hurricane 600 work? I know I'll have to loose one of the calipers.

Only other thing I could think of that you haven't tried would be the cables... But look on the bright side at least you can disassemble yours... My pad wont come off of the caliper... Any suggestions on how to remove it??

I remember having a hard time with one of the pads. It seems there is a cotter pin holding it in. can't remember just now.
But I don't have cables. I have hydraulic lines.

Have you replaced the hydraulic lines? Most brake hoses are multi-layered, right? And, after years of expansion and contraction the inner most part of the hose can begin to separate and collapse. I have seen this behind the parts counter, and had it happen on my own car. It can restrict the flow of fluid both too, and returning from the caliper. On my old BMW, when I applied the brakes, the car would pull one way, but when I released, the car would pull back the other. It was an "interesting" feeling, especially under "spirited" driving. I replaced the hoses, and all was normal again. The point is, if the interior of the hose may be preventing the fluid from releasing pressure fully, thus not allowing the pad to retract fully. If you have any question about your hoses, I would say replace them. What are you going to hurt, and if you switch to braided stainless (assuming that's not what you have now), you may improve the feel of braking too.

Later,

Ryan

I swapped the lines, not with stainless. I will use stainless lines when i do this upgrade.
Will the calipers I mentioned above work?

take a close look at the caliper arm and it's mounting bits.
Sounds like it could be bent or worn at the pivot.....

That's what I thought too. I replaced it the last time I replaced the caliper.
My next thought is to replace the whole fork with a dual disk cb750 front end. that's kind of expensive, but if I can't find a good bolt on alternative, that's what I'm going to do.

tweakedlogic.............in your master cylinder there are two small holes, one is very small, are they clear.also on your caliper, does the arm pivot...

Shrub...........have you tried pumping the caliper with a grease gun to remove the piston and the pad

Well, there is some debate with that. the one on the left is the return. So I used a paper clip and a really tiny screw driver to try and see if I could clear it. Nothing came out and I couldn't see any blockage. On both master cylinders I filled it half way with brake parts cleaner and let it sit. the the next day I held the end of the hose in the reservoir and pumped. still the same, no difference in performance.
the only thing I haven't done anything at all with is the brake switch. I can't imagine it has anything to do with my trouble.
