Calling all xs650 carb gurus!!!

Been Around the Block
So my new 1980 has some leaky carbs. I am going to rebuild a set. And they desperately need tuning. I currently have 3 sets of the bs34s from the 80+ models, and one set of bs38s from (i believe) a 79.

Which carbs are most worth putting money into? I have heard the 38s are easier to tune, but have never played with them. I have rebuilt a set of 34s before but have not really had to jet them at all. I have also looked at the jet kit from 650central and it looks like the kit for the 34s that they sell have adjustable needles.

While I am at it what else should I know to get the job done right?

I need someone to point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

Why all the concerns about jetting? You can worry about that later. Use stock jets. Take everything apart and get it hospital clean. Replace what is broken. Throw a kit at them. New needles and seats are a good idea.

I think I might prefer the BS34. Parts are more readily available and from more sources. New floats will be cheaper if you need them. If you need to rejet, you might want to stick with genuine Mikuni jets. The BS34 might give you more bottom end grunt, but the seat of my pants really can't tell the difference.

See what you can get for parts and what you have to spend before you make a decision.

As far as jetting goes, you haven't given any info. Worry about that later. Get it running.

MikesXS has parts for both sizes. I like the 38s because they are so similar to BS40 on the GT750 Suzuki.

I'd be tempted to say build whatever was stock and that bike and try to avoid messing with pods or the exhaust and you will be fine.

The jetting talk was trying to prep for the future. I will eventually be building the motor and will have to do some jetting. The more I think though I will probably upgrade to some better carbs then but unsure.

I think I will just rebuild the 34s. I know they run now just leak a little so I need to get new gaskets and call it good.

I appreciate the responses!
