Cb650cam in cb500 engine

Hey guys,

I went to pick up a cb550 the other day. When I got there it turned out to be a cb500 frame with a bored out (not sure what to) cb550 engine, with cb750 carbs.

What the?!?

So I went ahead and bought it, it was only $500 so I figured why not.

I have a spare cb650 cam I bought for my cb550, just wondering if it would work in this engine. Would the bigger pistons stop it fitting right?

Cheers

the bigger piston is bore and it may also have a taller dome but will have valve reliefs
cam timing and lift differences will make the difference to piston clearance
my guess is the timing is still very mild and close to the same
what is the difference in lift between the cams ?
you can figure this with your digital calipers
measure the base circle, set press zero, then measure across largest part of the cam this number is the lift
do it on both cams, both intake and exhaust lobes to determine the differences
proceed from there

surffly, very good point, right now im not motivated enough to pull it apart, got others to put back together first, ha!

When the time comes ill have to see what cam is already in it, the 650 cam has lobes only around the 1mm mark larger than the 550 cam as well.
