how long does the duplicolor black metallic need to dry before spraying with spraymax 2k? I couldn't wait for the seat so I will do the seat when it comes in to match. do you spray the 2k right after? do you wait for the 2 hour gas out time on the can? wait 24 hours?

Any advice appreciated ASAP. I know I should have asked this before finishing the initial paint but know I'm kinda stuck.

I generally give each paint about 24 hrs to dry before the next one.
So primer, 24hrs, paint, 24 hrs, stripe, 24hrs, 2k clear.

Looks good!
 
I just sprayed 2K on my tank two days ago, underneath was duplicolor. I gave it a week. Don't think that long is necessary but I was waiting for the humidity to drop anyway. If the humidity was good I still would have waited a few days just to be sure, paint is not the place you want to rush anything.

BTW, this was the first time I've used 2K and I'm mighty impressed. Lays real nice.
 
Yeah, I think I waited a week after laying the Duplicolor before I shot the Spraymax and all went well. Will most likely do the same on my new build this winter. Patience is key. Don't rush it. The wait is worth it.
 
Looking good! I used 2k on my Shadow build and it worked awesome. Are you going to buff it, or leave it with the satin/matte look? If you sand/buff it you want to get to it after about a day while it still hasn't fully hardened. It makes it easier, although you can really color sand/polish anytime after.
 
It has not been cleared yet. That is just the base. However I appreciate the advise on the buffing. I am not sure about buffing. i'll have to play it by ear after i get the clear on.
 
to be honest mate most manufacturers recommend giving the lacquer or next coat of base within a 24 hour-48 period or it will suffer from adhesion problems, maybe not straight away but somewhere down the line, you can flat back with a fine wet & dry but not on metallics.
Personally i dont cut or polish the lacquer i use as its scratch & chip resistant & is a complete sod to work on after its dry, if 2k is put on correctly its not necessary to flat, put plenty on & not too much air pressure

Thanks Carbon. I will be finishing the seat mounting and stripes this week. I will be stuck clearing after the fact. hopefully I won't see any adhesion issues. :(
 
has anyone had much success with the aerosol canned "adhesion promoter"? It seems like it might help in these situations, but i have no experience with it.
 
Forgot to add, cleared my tank last night with 2k and man I'm in love with this stuff, goes on so nice and smooth. Nice not having to sand and polish.
 
Yes, I've used both Bulldog and Duplicolor adhesion promoter, both with great results. I DID like working with the Duplicolor more cause it was a finer misting than the Bulldog, but the end result seemed the same.
 
In Canada, you can get it at Napa. They can mix colours there as well. I'm going to give that a try when I repaint the chin spoiler on my Gladius. I couldn't find a good match in Duplicolor.
 
Yeah, there's a place right down the road selling it and can custom mix colors, too. Very valuable resource!
