First cafe racer build : honda cr250 'ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED'

Hey everyone , always have been into sports bikes but i think it is time to move on. I want to get something more relaxed for some rides to the beach in this nice summer weather and was thinking of building a cafe racer. My mechanical knowledge is very basic. I looked into a donor bike and found this below:

So first of all, what do i need to look for before purchasing? like what potential problems? engine ones, shocks, leaks ? and what potential problems can i run into with this kind of model of bike? did some research and its a dirt bike engine .........which is something ive never owned before. Any help is much appreciated!
 
that is not a cr250 nor is it a dirtbike motor
it is just some model of honda twin(lightly modded) similar to what is called a CM here in usa
if you don't know what to look for as far as defects, and like a bike,hire a reputable mechanic to inspect it
that is my best advice

I think they were called CD250U over here:

rang the guy up , said needs works on the brakes and a service, it runs but im not sure how well, indicators need a reflash or something along those lines and yes confirmed a CM250 , is it worth it guys for 1200? Keep in mind in Australia everything is much more expensive , i think a non molested non converted CM would cost around 4k in good condition
 
at least do a proper compression test on both cylinders ,warmed up engine, wide open throttle..you know the drill..
if the seller wont agree to it, walk away
 
Depends if you can work on it yourself I suppose. If you have to take it to a shop to do the work then you'll spend another $1600 on top of the asking price to get it back on the road. So, you're in the $3K territory anyway which can get you a much nicer bike.

Not worth it in my opinion - wait to get something that is ready to ride.
