GT250/T250 Ignition Timing

OK, just got the engine back from the machine shop. I don't have a good TDC gauge so I want to set the basic timing using a test light, but I cannot remember how. I think I need to adjust the points so the light goes out just as the timing marks line up. Am I correct?

Check out this thread and scroll down to my reply#4. It'll explain how to use a light for setting the timing. http://www.2strokeworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=12211.msg92172#msg92172
Considering you're using the stock timing marks when looking through the stator plate, you won't need to find tdc, just set the point gap and adjust till the light goes off when the timing mark shows up. I highly suggest getting a dial indicator to "correctly" set your timing instead of relying on the stock marks.

That is my eventual goal. Since I have to get the bike inspected, I might have the shop recheck the timing and synch the carbs.
