so i just bought a 1979 honda CB650 and it needs a little work. i want to do as much as i can on my own with anyones help on here of course. i just want to limit my time at a shop because i want this to be my project. I'll post photos as the project progresses. ATM it starts when the choke is up but as soon as i drop the choke it pitters out. the guy i bought it from said he already cleaned the carbs but i'll do it again to make sure it was done correctly (what is the best way to do this?) there is also a loose hose on the left side that i think attaches to the little brass coloured nipple in one of the photos. but im hoping you can tell me if that is correct or not. the attached photos are the bike, the choke, the hose then the brass nipple. hope someone can help! thanks!

side note, some forums have pics in the text i dont know how to do this... so if i could get a quick lesson on that it would be appreciated.

I think what you are showing is a vacuum operated petcock. It should hook to a line on your intake manifold. When the motor turns it will open a diaphragm in your petcock and allow fuel to flow. I don't know if that is the hose you are showing, it may just be a vent.

Is that PAINT on the forks right above the sliders? That area should be left un-painted as that can ruin the fork seals and cause them to leak.

AS for the attaching photos to in the text areas the only way I know of is to use an outside hosting service like imageshack or photobucket, post the link that comes with the photo from that site in line with the text and it will show up.

Like that.

Im not sure if thats paint ill check when i get home, whats the best way to remove paint? Also if im going to clean the carbs what is the best way/products to use?

You need to adjust the choke tension. If it peters out when you "let go" then it's not holding as it should.

These bikes are notoriously cold blooded, and to get it running you might have to sit with the choke held out as long as a minute or two.

if the bike runs after warmed up and the carbs have been "cleaned" and you need the choke,(which is an enrichening circuit on these carbs) then most likely the pilot jets are stlll plugged up
you may be fine with just pulling them, making sure the passages are indeed clean and them soaking in chemtool overnight, blowing out the pilot jets till they are clear
look up to the light make sure you can see thru them
and that paint on the fork tubes is a sign as to the stupidity of the previous owner so no telling what can of worms you may open :(

mini speedo bolted up next to the stock Tach.... yeah.. you are going to find some interesting things in this old bike...

Welcome to the site, hope we can help. A lot of old honda's need choke to fire and then you need to leave it on for 1-2 minutes on warm days and as long as 5-6 on colder days before the bike will idle without stalling, you can ride with it on and the bike will let you know when to shut it off as it will act different. It looks to me like the forks have damaged chrome, not paint, which if it is smooth shouldn't hurt and can be hidden with some Gaitors, but if it is paint it should come off with some thinner, stripper and a scotchbrite pad or cloth. Paint doesn't stick to chrome well at all. It looks like the petcock is vaccum activated but someone may have converted it to regular and didn't cap the vaccuum line. I would suggest getting a manual and going through the basic services section. Oil, filter, valves, cable adjustments, brake check bleed if needed etc. it will familiarize you with the bikes condition and give you a clean starting point before you do any mods etc. A good clean up and better paint would go a long way as the overall style of the bike isn't that bad.

Cheers

yup the guy before me painted over everything, so ive scraped most of it off it comes off really easy. i tried running it for a while and it still died out when i dropped the choke. ill clean out the carbs on sunday then update this thing with how that went. got the bike for cheap so even if its junk im just happy to have something i can learn from. thanks for all the replies so far!

whatever you do do not disturb or try to remove or take apart the throttle slides(top of carb)
focus on the float bowl cavity, passages and jets, like I mentioned it is almost sure to be plugged pilot jets
