NY State Ttitle - How do I Get one

Allright, I apologize, but I am new here...so I am sure I am asking an obvious question. I have searched but could not find one specific to NY.

I have a 78 Honda that someone threw away - basically they wanted it out of the gagrage so I obliged and took it off thier hands.

Here is the situation...thier estranged daughter bought the bike 10 years ago from a freind and never registered it. It sat in teh garage and now the parents want it gone.

I have the old owners (original) registration in the bottom of the seat, but no title and contact with original owner.

How do I establish ownership? Can I have the parents sign a bill of sale and will that allow me to title it in my name?

The cops were zero help when I called them and they said to callt eh DMV, but the great state of NY does not answer their help line at the DMV.

Also - I read somewhere that I can get a salvage title for an abandoned vehicle - what are the implications, if any, with that?

Did you have the Police run a check on the VIN for stolen vehicle? I don't know the laws in NY but I would go on line and look up the titling laws that way. I know TN has at least 3 ways to get a title on a bike over 30 years old. When you have a good idea how it can be done go to the DMV and ask them to title it and see what they say. As I understand it NY may be pretty easy with the right forms filled out. Last is a titling service. may cost 150.00 or more.

how do you get a title with the NYSDMV?
short answer is you dont....not all all.

if it was a 72 or older you can get a regi in your name and get on the road but the latter stuff the DMV could care less about.
best bet is to either find a frame with a clear title or find someone that is out of state and can get a title for you.

In NY they have all of the "title services" listed and bounce the titles back all the time....

what bike is it?
if its a hawk its not even worth the money to get a title.
part it and make a few dollars and put that money in the fund for a better project

Thanks for the feedback. A dumb question...I always hear the hawk is a pos, why is it so bad? Know its no 750 f but for a free bike to drive around town to blow off some steam what's the harm?

Believe me, I am going bare bones just it runs and doesn't look queer.

Of course I would much rather have a decent ride but hey you gotta start somewhwre.

hawk isnt a bad bike to just run. but not something to put time or work into.
In my opinion can never be a cafe.

Even for just using it as a beater i bet you can find something for about $500 thats on the road ready to go. so spending $200 on a title and then still needing to fix yours up is bad math.
keep yours as a parts bike and find a good running titled bike to beat on.

sounds like ny is worse than nc. we can at least get a bonded title for a bike without a title.

OP - if you have the last known registrant you could always start looking them up and see if they'd apply for a lost title and sign it over to you.

Thanks Surffly...so my next dumb question...

what is needed to make a good cafe? Is it the frame geometry, the engine?

Its a whole package.

goal is to have a race bike on the street and not something that just looks a part....

look at 60/70s race bikes and you will see a general theam

and then look at teh broke back frame on cruisers and things should click alittle bit

tough situation, if someone else has the title for it, then they can come back and grab it at any time really... you can do a title laundering service, but again, even though you've got a "title" for it, someone else does too and that doesn't look good in the eyes of the law. I believe there is a process for titling an abandoned vehicle which involves sending certified letters to the official address of the previous owner, requesting sale docs., and if they come back undeliverable, you apparently have what's needed to title it... huge pain though, I never get a bike unless the actual title comes with it, even if it's not in the seller's name, you know you've got it and no one else can come back for the bike
