Reg/Rec replacement on the cheap

One of the members over on the GSR builds Reg/Rec replacements with Honda reg/recs for just about any bike. Rated at double the rating of most of our old OEM jobbies, and they're 40 bucks with shipping in US 48 with shipping to Canada. If anyone has any interest, lemme know and i shall point you the way. He's done over 20 or 30 of these and has had nothing but great responces about them. I just purchased one myself.
 
I'm interested - think I could use one on an XS650? There is an integrated one available on the market, but it runs $100.
 
Sure thing Tim, what year is your Yammie again? It has a seperate reg/rec right? Just want to give him this info so he knows what he's dealing with.
 
It is a 1978 engine. Seperate reg/rect. In later years, they went to an integrated unit, but I've heard that you can't use the later integrated units on earlier bikes, but I never understood why. I guess it has to be matched properly to the generator output? I know nothing of such things.

I'm going to be redoing my wiring from scratch, and want it to be as neat and tidy (and work well) as possible. Everything will be tucked up under the seat most likely.

I'm also running a Boyer electronic ignition with a single coil. Might be important. Ideally I'd like to run a smaller gel battery as well that I can sneak up under the seat. I'll still be using the electric start, and the bike will have all turning signals as well as basic lighting.
 
My GS also runs a seperate unit, and later went to an integrated, and then back to a serpate for a year, and then back to an integrated...LOL (can ya tell Zook electricals were a problem?) He said he's had customers use these with great success cenverting to an integrated unit, and provides a wiring diagram, and will even provide custom length wires at no extra charge. I'll email him to give him a heads up, then i'll give you his email addy. He does accept paypal as well.
 
What do the units look like BTW? Would love to see a wiring diagram - heck, I'd like to see a suggested simple wiring diagram for the whole bike :) Starting from scratch - need to find a source for wire too.

Hey Tim, do you know if your Yammie uses a seperate field coil or not? If so he says it may not work for that. He has a buddy that has one and is going to look at it to see if it either WILL work, or if he can design one that will. Trippler those are some pretty good prices as well. Comparable to what this guy is doing. He uses Honda RRs too.

Yes, his prices are fair, but who else offers a lifetime warranty ? He is a good guy to deal with if you need info.
 
If I knew what a field coil was I could tell you.

Doug - the link you posted seems to be for rectifiers, not integrated regulator/rectifier units. Or am I missing something? The XS650 (at least in 1978 and earlier) has seperate regulator and rectifier units. Later models have a single device that does both.

www.mikesxs.com sells an integrated unit for earlier XS650's like mine, for $100. Seems to be similarly priced to the combined units on this page:

Looks like Mikes only advises his combined reg/rect for stock harness. The field coil fits inside the stator and the rotor turns between them both thus exciting the output ??? or so i read ;D Tony will answer all your questions, if you wish to contact him of course.
 
I'll drop him a line. I can't see what harm running the Mikesxs unit on a non-stock harness would do. I'm running a stock electrical system, just not as many extra circuits (like the one that prevents you from starting the engine if the kickstand is down! - SHEESH).

It will be a while before I get into the electrical, but the sooner I nail stuff down the better.
