Finishing up the build on my '76 and stopped by the tag office to see what it would take to get a tag. I don't have a title so I was worried it would take a lot of time and money and filling out paperwork. Lady told me all I needed was the bill of sale and proof of insurance and I could walk out with a tag! Wish all you guys had it as easy as I do here.
 
That's good to know...so did they issue a title once it was registered? I know the bill of sale is supposed to act as the title, but if I was to buy a bike from you and went to the DMV here in SC to get it registered and titled, would they see the Georgia bill of sale as the title? I would think SC DMV would have to accept it as a Georgia title, even though its not the standard looking title of most states.
 
I was told I cannot get a title for it. I don't know if another state would recognize a bos even though we do
 
When I moved from GA to SC with my untitled bike, I had to request a letter from GA stating that they would not title it because of its age. With my GA registration, SC then issued me a provisional title which becomes permanent after 6 months or a year, giving any potential previous owners time to come forward. I knew it was a clean bike though so wasn't worried. The do a nationwide database search to check if it is reported stolen. They also knew when it had last been registered before me (which was in SC) and the BOS paper trail lead back to the correct guy.

It explains what to do on the DMV website, though it isn't exactly clear.


Georgia also does a nationwide database search so you can't just register any old thing. If it is hot, they will get it. I had to have a police officer come and verify the VIN before I could register it in GA. Luckily he didn't say anything about the pile of illegal fireworks sitting next to it that I had forgotten to move. :)
 
Georgia's title laws also make it a very good deal to by untitled bikes from neighboring states where people are forced to sell untitled bikes as parts bikes on the cheap. Just have to make sure they aren't stolen first.
 
I'm going to a motorcycle auction in a month. The auctioneer says bikes without titles have been checked by local police and have police paper work stating that they are free and clear vin numbers. I wonder if the SC DMV will honor these documents and issue a title? I guess I will roll the dice if prices are right...thanks for the info!

Most likely they will. I know that here in Utah part of getting a new title is getting a form and having a cop verify the vin and sign it.

Hmmmm, I had my bike registered in GA before bringing it to SC. Not sure if you can just buy it in GA then bring it to SC. Basically my GA registration and the letter from GA acted as my title.

Best to go and ask.

That's what friends have always done with their hotrods over the years- get it titled in GA and bring it across the border. I've done that a few times when I lived in SC. It's a lot easier that way. SC doesn't title untitled vehicles easily. The other way is to title a salvage vehicle and move numbers, but when people want numbers matching vehicles, that doesn't work. You can try to title it as a rebuilt vehicle, but then you still have to go the salvage route, and fill out four documents and go through a bunch of business. If it was salvaged out of state, then SC requires that it's rebuilt in that state. They make it a real pain in the ass. Typical South Carolina.
 
Damn. :o That sounds crazy. Well if you SC guys need to "sell" it to someone from GA to title it and then "sell" it back to you, I'm happy to sign a few papers. As long as that's not super illegal or anything. If it is I'm happy to buy your "parts" bike and ride it myself.
 
That sounds like a grate deal! Here in NC its a bit of a mess to get a lost title all sorted out. Havent had to go down that road yet but I know I will soon.
