Titling in the state of Indiana. Easy!

"In the age of information, ignorance is a choice
I walked in to my local BMV with the PROPER paperwork all filled out in its entirety right at the crack of local government time of 8:32am ::) . Paid $15.00 (+tax on $25.00 @ $1.75) and was in and out of there at exactly 8:47am... All you need is a police affidavit and a bill of sale form from the same state you live. In this case I bought the bike from Michigan but had the Indiana bill of sale form to be filled out and SHAZAAM!!!!! like magic I got a title 8) ... Most states will probably do it that way but you can't go around asking people at the bmv or law enforcement because 99% of them don't know what the hell they are doing. Even people in this area that buy and sell bikes all the time don't even know the proper way to do it... I learned on my own by trial and error. I have sold bikes to several states and also now to FRANCE!!! WITHOUT a title and got it across the pond to someone else with NO paperwork!!! ;) Don't get discouraged but then again don't tell the wrong people, you and the bikes whole life story :o . THEN they will deny you getting a title... I can almost guarantee there are ways to do this in every state. Even in Indiana it isn't easy even to find the bill of sale but I keep one for the number to pull up on the Indiana government bmv website (form#44237 in Indiana). After you buy a bike, have the proper bill of sale filled out by you and the seller. You call law enforcement non-emergency phone number and tell them you need a vin check done, it costs $5.00 cash and they fill it out on site by checking the frame vin with the bill of sale vin. You take those two to the bmv and you get your title... This WAS a pain in the a$$ to figure out and I went through the process over 25 times now but once you find out how to do it in your state you should post the procedure on here to share so we all know. Maybe an admin can create a section or thread for titling bikes?. I've included pics here of parts of the form, trying to exclude most of my personal information.

I forgot to add, it obviously has to be older bikes. I think 12 or more years old. It also can't be registered in the bmv system, which drops them out in 5 years. If it is registered in the bmv/dmv database you will have to have the previous owner apply for a lost title.... ALL of this is the same way the company in Las Vegas gets titles in ANY state but charges you about $700-800 a title to get it... pm me if you need more details.

Where in Indiana are you from? I've been trying to get my bike (78 cb400t) titled for almost a month. They are having me do the court order title because its never been registered in Indiana. I am trying to get it titled in Warsaw.

Just saw you got it done in Allen County

Yup. It is the same in the entire state of Indiana. Just read over the thread and follow it exactly... I do it all the time.. I'll send you a pm.

I'm a Fort Wayne guy!!!! Nice to see a vintage lover round here. There are not many. I have a xs500 I need to title soon.

I actually just moved back into fort Wayne.. I wasn't far being in Leo anyways but we moved back... I'd be more than happy to help you with the title work and maybe go for a ride sometime :D. Send me a pm if you need anything.

I have to agree 100% with the Indiana BMV. Used to be a huge nightmare before Daniels, but the thing runs like a well-oiled machine now.

Since they changed the process in July 2013 things are a little different now BUT you can still get a title in Indiana fairly easily... I tried to get it done at my local branch but they wont do it and said it had to be done through the mail to the Indy office. If you live in Indy maybe you can do it local but I'm not sure.

The mail process is the SAME as it was before except you have to do all the paperwork and leg work yourself now. You'll need this packet:

http://www.in.gov/bmv/files/Out_of_State_Title_Transfer_Packet.pdf

PLUS form # 37964

Fill it out without the "certified" letter BS and fill out the separate form (#37964) saying you have had it for X years and lost the title, you bought it from a garage sale, flea market, or do not have the PO info.

I have done this twice (since July and will do more) and got my title in 2 weeks. AND if you just get the title alone it is only $15.00.

Only hiccups you'll have is if it is stolen (which you'll know when law enforcement fills out their affidavit), OR it is still in the BMV database with a last known owner (takes 5 years from last registered date to fall out)... If those are ok and you fill out the forms completely and correctly you will have your title.

I have a couple Bridgestones I will be titling if I ever get the damn things running. ::)

Would you assume this new process is still the same best way of getting a bike that hasn't been registered in Indiana within 5 years and no title in hand? My father has had a 71 cl350 in his garage for the past 10 years after his brother died. His brother wasn't really well-known for doing things properly and we never could find the title or know how he came across it. I guess my worst fears is something coming back where it was stolen and they go after my father who honestly knows nothing about the bike.
