Used Permatex Ultra Black on Cylinder Head Cover

I installed my cylinder head cover using permatex ultra black silicone based gasket. I applied it properly, no globs. Now i've come across a few threads saying that Hondabond, Three Bond etc. is a must. I have a shop manual for my 360, which does not mention any gasket specs. I can run to my local bike shop and pick up a tube of hondabond, and pull the head cover again. But is it really necessary? Couldn't bits of any liquid gasket potentially break off inside the head if applied incorrectly? Anyone else use the Permatex?

If you put a thin coat (very thin) and have no beads of silicone on the inside you will be ok. The silicone, besides beading up and breaking off and getting in the oil, is too thick. Hondabond and threebond are thinner in consistency. And compress in a thinner film.

The coating you put of the permatex should of been see through. If not, tear it down, clean it up and do it right

The hondabond adds very little, if any, dimension to the mating surfaced. It also needs a very thin coat.

The machine surfaces need to be metal to metal. The hondabond just fills in any unevenness to prevent leaks.

I did put it on very thin, but now I'm worried.I think I should spend the 30 min to pull the head and re-do it with hondabond. The cost-benefit here is leaning severely towards the re-do lol.

I've rebuilt a ton of 360 top ends and used permatex every time.. No issues. Gasket is gasket in this instance as long as it is applied correctly (as mentioned above, very thin). I prefer the copper gasket though, it's not as "globby".

I actually called a local shop to see if they had any hondabond. The owner told me they didn't carry it. I asked him about it, and he told me he's been working on these engines since the early 80's and has always used a silicone based gasket without a singe issue. The shop has a great reputation, so I took his word for it and went about my day.
 
Hoda dealer is lucky or lying.
Silicon sets and forms strands or balls up which is what causes the problem
Hondabond (Yama,Kawa,Suzuki) are non setting so will smear and flow rather than ball up and block things
I've used silicon sealers in the past (around 1979~80) but have always found 'strands' when engine was stripped
Luckily the oil pump strainer caught the bits but I won't use it now I know better
If your careful everything should be fine, I would pull clutch cover after a couple of hundred miles to check pick up
 
I am with CrazyPJ on this. I used RTV Silicone gasket in the past. I also found the same thing, strands and little balls of it. I used the bright orange stuff, and you can see it in my early build pictures. It's gets all over the place....

I no longer use it where it can get in the engines.

ThreeBond 1104, 1184, etc, is identical to Hondabond. I am using the Threebond.
 
I use kawabond. I like the consistency way more than yamabond and hondabond.
 
Probably made by Threebond too...Threebond has a number of formulas. The Hondabond is actually a threebond product too.

I always respect your opinion, and I think you have a good idea. After a hundred miles or so I'll pull the cover to check it out. I'll bring this thread back with some photos of the results. It would be a cool test/results to have floating around the forum as this seems like a topic that comes up often with a lot of different opinions.
 
I think the main reason people use silicon and recommend it is the fact it's about a half to one third the price of any of the 'bonds'
Good ide to take some pics for future reference.
If you used thin enough smear of silicon you won't have any problems and it will be interesting to see how much ends up in the sump.
It needs a decent amount to block oil feeds

I doubt that, a tube of one of the bonds is about 8 bucks. I think it's because it's not sold anywhere except a dealer. People go to autozone and get the next best thing
 
I bought mine mail order.

Some of the bonds are silicone based.

But the consistency and formula are different then the rev types

I bought a large tube. The amount used is tiny, so buy a small tube unless you have a shop. A little goes a long way

I rebuilt my 360 with Permatex MotoSeal 1, as the various -bonds were not available locally to me. My local auto parts store just had this hanging up with the other sealants.

It goes on very thin - I applied it with q-tips to make sure I had a complete, but thin coat, and it set up just fine. The motor doesn't leak, so that's something ;D
