White on the exhaust?

Since nobody's going to answer me - that's a lot of soot, if that's what it is - and if the engine were burning so lean that there were that much soot all over the place I would think that even the double-walled headers would be pretty damn blue.

OP - what kind of gas are you running? Is the bike misbehaving in any other way that would make you think things are lean? What setup are you running on the motor/intake/exhaust?

I think where the confusion began was with "white residue" as there was no mention of white residue in the original post. I saw the pipe and thought lean mixture. From my experience when an engine runs lean for a long period of time the pipes will get so hot they will turn white. That being said that soot that you see ( I don't really see it but anyways) may be because the gasket was leaking and the carbon that wouldn't normally burn off out of the exhaust port was turning to ash and blowing out the gap. Just a thought. Im not saying this is fact.

Corrected the issue and synced the carbs with some help and all seems to be well. Von was right, I had forgotten to tighten down one of the nuts on that header. It was operator error.

I'm running the bike stock for the most part. No the bike really doesn't misbehave on the road. I run non ethanol premium.

Wondered about that. My guess is that the residue is burnoff from the premium fuel - you're wasting money putting anything but regular in there, and a lean condition wouldn't be corrected by a carb sync. Glad you got it sorted out.

Oh the carb sync didn't fix the lean issue, that was me adjusting the mixture screws. The Sync was done because Von suggested it and I have a tendency to believe most of what he posts from reading around the site. Also, the guy that I have here in Wisconsin that is the guru of the motorcycle in my mind, also suggested it. Then the fact three of the four pipes had the residue in it made me wonder. The bike sat for a long time before I came to possess it.

And I have to wonder, why is Premium a waste? I've always put premium in my motorcycles... mainly because it's only a little bit more and it's the only way I can get no ethanol in my fuel.

The ethanol is another ball game entirely - if premium gas comes without it, bully for you. The octane boost in the premium gas will not make a difference in that engine.
