Re: 1975 CB360 Cafe Edit Volume 2

Ice storms and earthquakes one week, 80 degrees the next… gotta love this place. Time has been hard to come by the last week or so. I've still got trees and limbs to clean out of my yard. A few things on the bike though…

Installed 14.5" shocks which gave me the stance I'm looking for. However, I'm a little skeptical that the angle of the swing arm may interfere with the chain. I'm going with an 18T/34T sprocket combination from Sprocket Specialists. We'll see if that's enough for chain clearance when the engine is installed.

Primered the seat and fenders, wet sanded to 500 grit, another coat of primer and ready for paint. Started stripping paint from the tank. 4 layers of paint and a few dings, but all is looking good. A little rust in the tank, so get ready for etch.

Up next: rebuild the wheels with alloy rings, finish detabbing, start shopping for new tires and rebuild the front forks (I wonder if lowering the front forks will improve chain clearance?).

Darn......that things looking good.

Even the after shock was felt here too!

Got a cold blast coming next week. Sure am enjoying this great weather the last few and next few days.

Keep up the good work. Anything I can help with, let me know.

Question............do you know of a good machine shop here? Appreciate it.

I'm looking. I talked to Bo's, but they only do automotive. He said he'd do cylinders, but no custom work.

Hey thanks man.

I have a CB100 cylinder that I need to have bored out .50 over. Was just wondering if you knew of some place here in Augusta.

PM me what part of Augusta.....maybe we can get together for a ride or just bs. Maybe a beer or bunch.

Took 3 coils out of the front shock springs. Should tighten the front end up and it gave it an inch drop for a better rake.

Re: 1975 CB360 Cafe Edit Volume 2

Well, one of my fork pipes is bent beyond spec. I thought it looked off, but never did a check. No need to put a dial indicator on it, the eyes can see it clear. I'll be picking up another set tomorrow, so I took the opportunity to rebuild the forks altogether and go with a different way to lower them. Instead of pvc, I filed down a 1/2" x 1 1/2" emt coupling leaving a flange at one end to seat the spring. I cut the suspension spring at the fat end to keep it progressive. Something I discovered in all of this, was that the XL175 uses a smaller diameter fork pipe with the same length as the CB360. However, their bottom pipe has the same diameter but it's 50mm or so longer. I don't hear too many people talking about raising their front end, but that could be a way to do it- switch out the CB360 bottom pipe for a longer XL175 pipe. Could be a good start to converting a CB360 to trial or dual.

Front fork seals were replaced today, so they are complete, lowered and rebuilt. On to the brakes.
Began working on the front lighting.
I modified an XL175 headlight bracket:

I prefer a smaller headlight, so I went with the headlight off of my XL175 parts bike...

I like that smaller headlight too. Was thinking of doing something similar on my 750.

Just not sure what I would do with all the wiring.

Looks good on there.

I'm hoping to simplify the wiring, so that won't be an issue. There was a wad of wiring in the XL bucket, too. So they can fit their fair share.

I ran an 18/34 setup for one season. I liked the 6th gear rpm at 65mph, didnt care to much for the loss of torque.
You have to give her some fuel to get her rolling.
Revving her up, everyone expecting a rocket launch...then you take off like a turtle. in 6th with a decent headwind and a small up hill. you may loose a little speed and have to shift back to 5th more often.

I presently have 17/34.

Running 18/33 on mine right now, but the engine has had a bit of work. 70mph in second gear is nice. ;D

I don't like the sound of that at all. The last thing I want to do is look like a moped coming from a stop. I knew I would lose low-end torque, but I expected more help at the top end. Part of what prompted me to change sprockets is the taller rear springs. I expect to lose chain clearance over pivot on the swing arm. Though, i won't know for sure until I get the motor remounted.

What engine work have you done?

+2mm over on the bore (378cc), custom forged aluminum pistons to bring the compression up to 11.5:1, +1mm over on the valves, mild port (cleaned up the casting marks, mostly), 5-angle grind on the valve seats, hot cam (+.040" lift and 21° duration). Also running tuned open stacks and long exhaust.
