Project "Gremlin"... 78 CB750 ***PIC HEAVY***

timdhawk

Been Around the Block
Well, after meaning to do this for about the last year I'm finally getting around to throwing up a project thread of my own. This is my 78 CB750. I got it off e-gay almost 2 years ago. Rode it twice and then went to town on it. There have been many trials and tribulations with this thing so far, from spoke vendors sending the wrong spokes 3 times and then destroying a rim to powder coaters not getting it right the fist time (or second on occasion) and many parts bought that weren't needed or decided not to use...the list can go on and on!
I don't know what the final product will look like but but this is where I'm at now:

These are the e-gay pics:

I decided the tank that came with it needed to go:

so I got this one instead and went to work:

cut out original filler port, repaired rust, and knocked in some knee dents and added bond-o:

Chopped off tabs and the factory seat frame ends and fab-ed a radius to fit the seat :

Custom oil tank and electrical tray: (oil tank has since been re-fab-ed by a fab shop since mine was more like Swiss cheese and less like oil tank)

re-doing/rebuilding the wiring harness and fitting all the electricals in the tray:

With this project, the motor is one of the last things to get done - here is one reason why - a crack (stress) along one of the crankshaft towers:

I have a spare case but have heard conflicting thoughts as to whether or not I can put the internals from one case into another. Something about tolerances and such. I need to do more investigation. So anyway, that's what I have as of now.
I will keep the pics coming. Thanks for looking.
Tim

PS - any ideas for a project name?

Re: Project "name pending"... 78 CB750 ***PIC HEAVY***

Love the colors, the fab, the bike! Great work so far.

Re: Project "name pending"... 78 CB750 ***PIC HEAVY***

Great job! you do some excellent work. how long have you been at it on this project? Your tank come out great. too bad about the engine. you should be able to swap the parts for one engine to the other. you may need to get new bearings and you cant mix and match case halves. Keep it up

Re: Project "name pending"... 78 CB750 ***PIC HEAVY***

AMAZING so far!

weld that case. its fine. ;D ;D

cant wait to see her done!

Re: Project "name pending"... 78 CB750 ***PIC HEAVY***

Wow man, just..... wow.

Been busy, huh?

Re: Project "name pending"... 78 CB750 ***PIC HEAVY***

Two questions:

1. Why have you been hiding this beauty from us for so long? HOLY SHIT! Great stuff man.
2. What did you do with the tank that came on it? I'll buy it if its still hangin around.

Really looking forward to seeing her come together!

Two answers:
1. Shear laziness + C.O.D. MW2 after the kids are in bed = no time! = )
2. Tank got chopped up to see how the vent tubing was ran on the inside...sorry.

Thanks for all the kudo's! It really helps the drive to finish this bitch.

Re: Project "name pending"... 78 CB750 ***PIC HEAVY***

Bummer... Great bike though! Keep the updates comin!

Re: Project "name pending"... 78 CB750 ***PIC HEAVY***

nice work for sure. Like someone has said, the main problem swapping internals will be your bearings might not fit. Honda bearings are colour-coded to the journal size, which on the DOHC models is stamped on the case in letter codes like BBBBB etc. You'd only need to replace the mains at the most, because your rods will follow the crank across.

Anyway, great job.

Great work. I really love what you did to the tank.

Once again nice bike. I see harbor freight bit you hard too. I was wondering what you got going on in the buckets. I thought at first it was electrolosis but now i'm wondering if it isn't a plating process. Keep it up and please post some more pics

Re: Project "name pending"... 78 CB750 ***PIC HEAVY***

Wicked job! If your in Ontario, I will trade you a 78 engine for one of your oil tanks with all the fittings

I know what you mean about those same trials and tribulations on my 78k ..buying parts you never use sucks!! Keep at it, spring is comin!

Re: Project "name pending"... 78 CB750 ***PIC HEAVY***

Wow what an awesome build! man oh man that bike is clean!! I really gotta try that electrolisis??? technique for cleanin ol parts up!

Re: Project "name pending"... 78 CB750 ***PIC HEAVY***

Loving your build. Excellent work. I am just starting a 77 cb750f.
