Attempting to Hammer out a Front Fairing...

If you want to create a shape like a fairing with only handtools, the quickest way is to learn how to hollow. So first thing is to make some basic tools: 1. Stump - Find a decent section of tree trunk (around 15" in diameter) and cut a 8" diameter cone into it with a depth of 1.5" 2. Hammer -...

    Having a problem tucking aluminum

Couple of points: 1. When you make a tuck in the metal, ensure that they aren't too tall. Too tall of a tuck will allow the metal to fold over when hammered instead of it being hammered into itself. You probably shouldn't have tucks any taller than 1" or so in height. 2. For an aluminum seat...

    Alternative swing arms for XS650?

As mentioned, the Radian swingarm is a drop in replacement. The swingarm from a 1986-91 FZR600 works as well. You will have to grind down the swingarm bosses on the inside of the frame to get it to fit. This is one fitted to my project XS650.

What type of welding class should I take?

Not really, and yes you can weld AL. Some coachbuilders actually prefer it to any other process for welding sheet metal and sheet AL. Kirkham Motorsports (www.kirkhammotorsports.com) uses on the 427 Cobras they build. Check out this video: How Good is your TIG Weld?

    Building mufflers.

Download the Cone Layout software from http://pulserate.com and use it to create and create the flat patterns to transfer to your sheetmetal. You have a ring roller, so forming the cone isn't an issue. If you don't have a ring roller you can use a rubber mallet and a long enough length of pipe...

    Guess what I'm making?

Those look quite nice, and I may be interested in a set. I am in the midst of putting together a XS650 Cafe that those would work well with. I'm in Newmarket if that means anything

    Fab Question (Attn Welders)

As far as a lot of tools need for curved panels, not really. You need a few hammers, a hollow stump and some dollies. All these things you can build yourself, or puchase inexpensively. If you really want to pursue the craft of metalshaping, then go to these websites: 1. www.metalmeet.org 2...
