    GS650 Cherry Poppin Build

I've come across bikes that were running fine without screens on any of the seats, but they're cheap enough that there's no reason not to have them. Especially if you've recently cleaned your tank. It's cheap insurance. Z1 Enterprises has them.

I meant the LED strips under the tank. Not my bag. I'm with you on function over form, though.

That's a very clean bike. I don't care much for the lights or the carbon fiber looking cam covers, but that's just me. I actually like the case guards that were made for the GS bikes. They fit nice and tight. The luggage rack is handy too. If you plan to make any mods (more like...

    Worn screws/bolts, how to remove?

Just a heads up, the impact driver doesn't always save the day. I've removed tons of stuck screws off Japanese bikes with an impact driver but was bested by those same exact sprocket cover screws on my '81 GS450. I used the largest, best fitting bits I had, used a rubber mallet, the whole...

You'd be fine just replacing the R/R. That's why I said to get a rewound stator, if you need it. The Shindengen R/R has a pretty beefy heat sink and fins already, but if you were planning on putting the R/R somewhere it doesn't get any airflow, the cooling fan might not be a bad idea.

It's not a bad idea. I ordered my SH775 from 2wheelpros for just under $70. If you're going to bullet-proof the electrical system, take a look at posplayr's (from the GS resources) Solid State Power Box and get a rewound stator from Steve, if you need it. Don't forget to do all the basics...

Nice! I suggest you use the two bikes to build one stock, running bike ASAP and get riding. Then you can build the other one using the feedback you get from the stock bike to make improvements.

Replace airbox with single car pod...

I think too many people try to apply automobile knowledge to motorcycles when it comes to the way a top end works. The airbox on a car is not the same as the airbox on a motorcycle. Before the air gets to the cylinder head on a car, it has to go through the airbox, the intake pipe, past a...

Reinstalling carbs on four cylinders is one of the reasons I prefer twins! Try lubing the intake and airbox boots up with silicone, put them in place loosely on the intake side (push the airbox back as far as possible for clearance), connect the throttle cable, push them all the way into the...

Replace airbox with single car pod...

Having a single filter element feeding multiple carbs isn't a new concept. K&N has a "lunch box" filter that's a standard mod for the GS500: I had set of these, side by side, on an FZR600 years ago: Going without an airbox is slightly more effective on singles and twins than on fours, but if...

Just a warning, you might have trouble with the clubman's also. They often hit the tank as well and tend to have too narrow of a clamping area for most 4 cylinder handlebar clamps. Superbike bars tend to work much better on these bikes. Especially with stock foot pegs and controls.

Go to www.cycleorings.com and order an o-ring kit for CV carbs for $14.73. He (Robert Barr) will throw in float bowl drain o-rings for a penny if you need them. Also, order a set of intake o-rings ( should be 38mm but double check with him) for $3.91 and 16mm stainless bolts (again, double...

If you're dead set on using the brass parts from your kit, please check them against what you pull out of the carbs. Those aftermarket kits often have generic jets that don't match the stock sizes. That's why using them isn't recommended. You'd be miles ahead just cleaning what you've got...

The boots will have cracks if they're in really bad shape, but they shrink and turn brittle with age even if they don't show any obvious signs of wear. If you can easily squish them in your hand, they should still be good. The o-rings that seal against the head should definitely be replaced...
