How to test and troubleshoot your charging system

Hi Had a problem with severe misfire/ engine died, after 15-20 minutes of running. Tested everything from gas tank cap to spark plugs etc. Always started up fine when cold but started to misfire after a couple of miles. Electrics were fine, 14 V output and so. Almost given up on this, tried one...

Getting out swing arm bushings? Best practices?

Use a drill to remove most of the rubber, then press the inner tube out with a socket or tube. Then use a hacksaw, like Taezer suggested, to split the outer tube.

what would cause a rotor to go bad?

I had a stator once, whose windings broke, probably because of vibrations. If copper vibrates it gets hard, if it gets hard it brakes.. I guess that can happen to a rotor too..

Can someone give me a history on dot brake fluid?

Dot 5 (silicone) is great for normal motoring, not for track use. Does not work well with ABS or servo boosters. Dot 5.1 is the same as Dot 3 and 4, but meets another (normally higher) specification. Some older rubber parts , made for Dot 3, do not tolerate Dot 4 or 5.1

    Tempting Fate? or Hot Fire?

Hi! Be careful swapping coils around different ignition systems. A CDI system work quite differently to a points or transistor system. A CDI does not work with 12V to the coil, instead they use something like 400 V, which of course calls for a totally different type of coil.

    XS650 No Spark, HELP

Since it was running with the old parts, I suggest that you put them back again, one at a time, to isolate the fault. If it is still not working, when all the old parts are back, something must have happened to the wiring.

    XS650 No Spark, HELP

Are you sure you have the correct rotor for Tci ignition? Points and Tci rotors are not the same, but some aftermarket ones will work on both.

    battery charge rates

I use an ordinary automotive charger, 12 V , 4 Amps, but with a 2,7 ohms, 10Watts resistor in series. Nothing fancy about that, just something I had laying around, but it works fine. Just watch the time, if you leave it overnight, your battery will be boiled. If the battery feels warm or if you...

Dual filament signal to a single filament ?

You can make a circuit like the one in the picture but omit the diode in the flasher circuit. Keep the diode in the running circuit, as the diode has a natural voltage drop of 0,7-0,8 volts. Maybe that is enough to make a dim running light, if not, you have to add a resistor in the running light...

Ok, it's time I asked for help

The same thing happened to me: no response when turning the mixture screw in or out. Turned out that the tip of the adjuster screw had broken off, and was stuck in the low speed orifice. No wonder I couldn't adjust the idle!

How many lights can I put on an Xs400?

To determine max load on the electrical system is really quite simple. Hook up a voltage meter to the battery. Start the engine and rev up to cruising rpm. Voltage should be 14,0-14,4 to get a fully charged battery. Then turn on your electric lights. The voltage should drop when you turn on more...

Cheap 'Pod' filters - why you shouldn't - Public service posting

Well, what do you know....You learn something every day! Unnecessary knowledge: the vacuumcleaner is an Electrolux, who owned Husqvarna motorcycles ("Husky") for a brief time, but then sold it to some Spanish or Italian company. I believe the brand is now owned by BMW.

Just beware that the carbs are clean, you don't want gas fumes into the vacuum cleaner, might be a surprise.....
