I wasn't sure how to bench test the starter so I'll do that. Thanks. And the starter clutch does engage one way and not the other. Really everything looks ok there at least to the eye.
Hey guys, trying to get my 1980 CB900 Custom running. The starter doesn't turn the motor. I can here the starter spinning( doesn't sound very good) The splines on the end of the starter look good. I popped the side cover and the gear that the starter turns looks to be in good shape too.

Swivel' the guy I got the bike from said he thought the front end was from a Yamaha' so could it possibly be a Yamaha wheel? I don't know if it is Yamaha, that's just what he said.
I didn't realize they were different. I thought the front was a comstar, but like I said, I know the forks are not original som the wheel may not be either. Maybe it got wrecked and someone replaced the entire front end. Who knows?
Pretty sure it's the original and all the markings seem to match the rear, but I know for a fact the forks are from a different bike so who knows. Maybe someone will recognize it. Nice 81 750 by the way.
The image in my head of that engine all shiny and clean sitting in that frame nicely painted sitting on a work stand in my garage with all its endless possibilities and potential is just too strong!!! Gonna look at it Sat morning and probably offer $200 bucks!!!
