All i needed to install my seals was a socket about the same size as the OD of the seals. Tapped it in with a hammer. Getting them out is another story. Have lots of small prying and grabbing tools on hand. A good set of small sidecutters would probably make short work of it though.

Here you go. Now you can see how its keyed on the crankshaft. Nothing holding it on except 30 years of pressure and a little rust.

Damn homie, thats a lot of rust. Nothing is actually holding the advancer mechanism on since you removed the bolt. Grab it by the shaft with some channel locks with saran wrap on the jaws or something to keep from fucking it up and give it a good wiggle while pulling straight away from the...

Theres step by step illustrated instructions in the svc manual. Check the section for 81's section first, then go by the main section if the supplement doesnt have anything. http://kz400.com/Workshop%20manual%20bilder/Kawasaki%20KZ440%20Service%20Manual.pdf

Wow, the forks are usually pitted and nasty even on garaged kz's. Well, thats a big chunk of maintenance you dont have to do!

With the exhaust, as long as they have some muffling making backpressure you should be okay. When the chrome upper forks rusts, or when anything rusts for that matter, sometims materieal is "pushed out" from under by the rust. Thats what you wanna sand down so that theres no lips for the fork...

Youre acrually installing transistorized ignition. I just refer to everything that isnt "points" as electronic. The usual selling price for the coil, ignitor, pickup, and rotor is fucking ridiculous. Try this if youre the tinkering type...

Hey Doogie, where are you located? Ive got a bunch of spare parts and know these bikes like the back of my hand. I might trade a weekend of labor for that fairing if youre close enough.
