That's the thing though, everything is still in there. The top fork nut is still on.

It's the hex head screw that holds the fork tube to the sleeve. It spins freely however it will not come out. I tried using a screw extractor so I could pull and spin at the same time but to no avail, it remains stuck. Any ideas?

I was wondering, how does this spring get installed? It's a 75 cb550f shift mech.

It wasn't bad because it didn't even have time to completely set yet. All it took a a quick scrape with a plastic blade and it was off.

Update: Reopened the case, turned the bearings the right way, and JB welded both spots and left it apart overnight to cure. Maybe tomorrow I will be able to finish the bottom end rebuild.

Yup, totally forgot about the dowel pins when I was putting it together. Cracked them both. Slightly depressing.
