CB 500 - No idle, no power at low rev, black spark plugs (4-1 and pods)

What colour are your plugs exactly? taking a look at this chop chart should help diagnose the issue. Also, what size jets are you currently running? Sounds to me like it's running rich. While you're riding, put the choke on half-way or so and see how the bike responds. If it runs better with...

    seat mounts/bobber

i guess it depends what kind of hinge you're planning on using. Biltwell uses slots on their hinge. so long as your mounts are in the middle of the seat it should fit. http://www.biltwellinc.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=34

rolling stereotypes part II... do these sleeves make my arms looks bad ass?!

a couple wraps of EL wire around your arms would would make you really visible. a strip of red down the back of the arm, yellow down the front would be pretty effective. you can get something like 5m for 5$ shipped off ebay, and they come with a battery pack that runs off a couple AA's...

CB 550 k Carb repair kit question PIC

i'd start with it in the middle clip, that way you can adjust up or down depending on how the bike is running.

CB 550 k Carb repair kit question PIC

that clip is used to adjust the position of the needle jet. the only way to get at it is by removing the top cover and then the slide.

CB550 Carb Boring Services- "Almost Free"

I just bought a new set of plugs today, so i'll be doing a plug chop asap. All float levels are set to 22mm at the moment. I found this chart to be a great help for visualizing which circut is doing what at a given throttle position: I also got a few tips from Rick for diagnosing issues...

CB550 Carb Boring Services- "Almost Free"

I swapped in the #115 mains a few days ago and have been dealing with random fuel leaks but finally got it all buttoned up and went out for a ride today. The current specs: Mains: #115 Pilot: #40 Needle: 3rd clip (middle position) Idle Screw: 1/2 turn out Below 4000rpm with the engine under...

    DIY Pod Filters

I'm very familiar with jetting. I've already got a 4-1 on the bike and i've had to adjust the carbs to accomodate that. I just had a set of carbs bored out by Rick Denoon http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=32327.0. I'm getting them dialed in now with the stock air box then i'm going...

    DIY Pod Filters

I'm not sure where the 3 1/4" measurement is taken from on the site that motomadness posted, but my emgo's measure 3 1/4" in full height (rubber flange to the small tapered end). If i wanted to buy a set that fits, the ones that do are well documented on the SOHC4 forum...

    DIY Pod Filters

I'm mounting them on a cb550. Again, the emgo filters at 3 1/4" are far too tall. They do make shorty versions that will fit, but waiting 4 weeks to get them here sucks. Swivel, if you like these, you should have seen my home made condoms. Those things were a masterpeice.

    DIY Pod Filters

Villagers hats was my initial plan, but this was a close second. I understand that the paper filters will clog with minimal use. This is more of a proof of concept. If it works well enough i may find some closeout K&N filters and chop those up. If it all works shitty, at least i didn't spend a...

    DIY Pod Filters

So the selection of pod filters for the cb500/550 is limited. K&N makes a set, but they cost around $200 http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod=rc-0844 When i took a look at their specs, they were 3"O.D. with a 2" height. Fortunate for the cb500/550 the size of the flange needed...

'77 CB 550 throttle not returning...

This is a different rack of carbs that i found on an image search, but it'll show you the right idea of where the return spring should be. There's a little cylinder that fits in between the two inner carbs that needs to be installed before the carbs are mounted onto the plate that holds all 4...

'77 CB 550 throttle not returning...

Do you have the return spring installed on the carbs? it hooks in between the two inner carbs and runs up to the cam where the throttle cables attach.

    universal simple wiring diagram?

I forgot about this one, thanks James I used this as a template to wire a friend's bike from scratch. It still works flawlessly after two years. I'm slowly accumulating parts to rewire my bike. I'll see if i can post a walkthrough on how i do it once i get around to it.

CB550 Carb Boring Services- "Almost Free"

I've got a set of #115's that i'll be swapping in next. When i talked with Rick, he said that on the cb400 he goes up by as much as 28% on the main jet size depending on how built the engine is. I took a stab in the dark and confirmed what i thought - #125's are going to be way too much for how...

CB550 Carb Boring Services- "Almost Free"

Also, does anyone have any tips for installing/removing the carbs? Currently i'm having to remove the battery box, air box, and plenum in order to get enough wiggle room to actually pull the carbs from the intake. It's a real pain and takes me the better part of an hour to remove then install...

CB550 Carb Boring Services- "Almost Free"

Finally got around to doing some testing, albeit not much. I got the carbs swapped into my bike and i'm doing my initial tests with the stock airbox. The carbs are currently just bench sync'd, but i will have them vacuum sync'd in the next week or so. The fist set of main jets i swapped in...
