Hey everyone.
This is my first project. I bought this bike recently and I love it. For quite a while I want to do a cafe racer project and now is a good chance.
I do this project with a friend of mine who already restored a few bikes and cars and has some interesting stuff on his website - www.backontwo.com.
My vision for this bike is kind of chubby or "heavy looking" cafe. a bike that will give some kind of massive bad ass look.
Now I'm focusing on taking off all the parts and get a bare chassis. I'm almost there as you'll see, but these past two weeks the weather had other plans for me.
I'm taking a lot of insperation from the beautiful Matchless G50.
Have a great weekend!

This pic makes me laugh every time I see it

B.T.W - sorry for the quality of the pics. it's my sh**ty phone.
Here in Israel also, although it was a popular bike here in the 50's and 60's. Most of the bikes that left here frome those days are mostly BSAs (if you watch closely you can see one behind my bike). In the 50's and 60's, lots of bikes got here by private people and not by a regular import. Earlier, in the 40's and maybe the 30's, many bikes and cars were brought here by the british, since this part of the middle east was part of their empire. The problem with these bikes is that they have no registrations and it's quite a mess to make it legal.
Great thread already mate i know what ya mean bout the weather its been crazy here in UK still waiting to paint tank n seat unit are ya gonna change colours on your build looking forward to ya progress cheers got me a build thread might give ya some polishy ideas > cb350f 1st project agh!
Exactly! with a few changes to make it more personal. I started looking for this fuel tank and I found a fiber replica and I'm not sure I'd like a fiber fuel tank (I understand it has problem with ethanol and I don't want to take a chance). I also found one from metal but the price was way over my budget.
Yorkie - for your question - the color scheme is going to be black and some kind of ivory or creme accents. I'm going for a more personalized design.
As for the seat, I found a nice replica and I'll probably buy it. The question that I'm asking myself and now I ask you - how much the two chassis (G12 and G50) are similar?

Not really - the 7R, G50 and G45 are essentially all the same frame [ later models ] and was the Competition dept's own specific design.
There's several 7R seat copies around at the moment here in the UK - some are exactly as per the original, and some are , well just close !
I have the original 7R seat that I used back in the early 60's - just swapped it out when I sold whatever bike it was on at the time. I bought a copy 7R seat base last year and if you haven't got an original to compare it with - it's OK.
In the day I Cafe Racered a G12 and a CSR AJS [ 650 ]. I used a 7R seat and at the time I had an original 7R tank [ alloy ].
There's some pretty good coatings around now to protect FibreGlass tanks against Ethanol, even if you could find one - an original alloy tank would probably cost more than the rest of the project !
Nice looking project you have there Union Jack. I would love to have one myself, can't wait to see how this turns out.
And Beach, that G45 is simply AMAZING!!!"

The G45 was a bit of a White Elephant - it was hoped it would take over from the 7R and G50, but was never a success and was soon dropped from the range. It sounded absolutely georgeous. Colin Seeley used one in his sidecar outfit before switching to BMW Rennsport.
Check out "Beachcomber's Tales from the Day" for a story relating to a G45.

So... some progress.
I Took off the engine, finally. This boy is heavy!
As i've already seen (but only now took pictures), there were some kind of patches on the crankcase. I'm not sure what is underneath it, but it will probably require some welding :-\
Also something I already knew about is the front fork, which I wanted to replace anyway - as you can see, it's cracked. I'm quite certain the bike had an accident. Not something that cannot be repaired, but it still sucks.
As for the moment, I have the bare frame with everything taken off including the front end. All I have to do now is waiting for parts to arrive from abroad.
That slider can be TIG welded back together, haul it to a high end boat repair shop. Not sure where that would be in your corner of the world, Haifa maybe?
That crankcase set has definitely seen better days. That's a lot of low grade repair welding (or at least piss poor finish work). Is that a starter well in the front of it? I've never sen that particular engine up close, only played with a couple Matchless singles an old (really old, born in 1921 type old) friend had in his museum.
I've got a friend who's a welding master (he welded a CBR600RR frame after an accident, and the guys from Honda here in Israel came to see it because it was done so well) I'll probably take all the weldings to him.
As for the crankcase - these stuff you see, it's not welding. It is some kind of clay (at least that's how it looks, it has fingerprints all over it). This is why I'm not sure if it's broken or the previous owners put it in order to stop oil leakage.
