1970 CB350 build by 14 yr old with help from dad

Been Around the Block
We brought this beast home from the barn it had been sitting in for the last 30 years. My son wants to build a cafe while I build a Triton. We took the carbs off several weeks ago and got a head start with them.

way to go My 12 year old daughter wants to build a car with me
In a year or two i might get something to start on with her

This will be a long build since he won't be able to ride it on the road for a couple of years. We got the carbs finished last night (they were nasty) and put them on today just to see if we could get to run. when putting the battery in I noticed that the main ground wire was missing so we swiped one off a donor bike. Cranked it over but no go. Checked for spark.....none. Checked the points....toast. Swiped a set of points off a parts bike and had success! Rigged up a temporary tank and it fired right up!! Now its time to take it all apart and start the build.

Ya thanks. This should be fun!

Here is my son sandblasting the bottom of the tank. Unfortunately, There were some holes that he found from the rust. Bummer. Anyone have a 69 or 70 cb350 tank? He really likes that style as opposed to the newer tanks.

Great project for you and your son.

If you can't find a tank on DTT or Ebay, there are ways to seal those pinholes. Get all the gas fumes out, and you may be able to have the holes welded and get some POR-15 liner for the inside. I've never had that problem yet, but I know it's possible.

Nice project for the two of you! He will never forget this. I remember all the projects I ever did with my dad. Some of the best times of my life.

Those holes are small enough that you could probably fill them with jb weld and then coat the inside with POR-15. If you decide to scrap that tank, I'd be interested in it. PM me if you are going to do so.

Nice work so far though! I love me a good cb350 build! (i'm finishing my 2nd and i'm about to start on my 3rd)

Great Project. I am looking forward to doing this with my son, he's only 5 now but loves 2 wheels. He jsut got off training wheels and is getting a new bike for his birthday, pedals for now but something with an engine soon. AS for the tank, I am not sure where you are located but I hade similar pin holes show up in the filler tube on my RAV4, being broke, I went to the Auto store and they have a 2-part epoxy tank repair kit that is similar to JB weld but has a fiberglass matt re-enforcing part and cures in 5 mins vrs the over night of JB weld. I cleaned up the tube, applyed the epoxy and matt and have been leak free for months now and it looks to be holding up well. I would say if you like the tank and your budget is small, fix the holes and line the tank. It should get you years of riding. The kit cost me 9.99 at Canadian Tire.

Keep it up.

Oh Yeah, and post up some of Dad's project too.
Cheers,
Maritime

great project... it took a two years of convincing from age 13 onwards to get my father to buy my bike for me... Only thing is i did all the work myself.

Im not the kind of guy to be a worry wart, but your son should have little skin showing while blasting.

fill the tank holes with lead solder, not JB weld.

should be fun... i want to see some pics of the triton! ;)

Very cool! Im lovin all these young guys showin up here. Keep up the good work! And +1 on gettin some pics of that Triton up here!

You are right about the lack of protection while blasting.

The Triton is just a roller and a box of engine parts at this stage. The first step on that will be building the engine and then go from there. When I make some progress I will try to start a thread on this one too.

I have blasted like that it really sucks plus you can't really recover your media, My advice would be to make up a plywood blast cabinet, wont cost much and will make life much easier.

im super jealous of that triton man! thats been one of my dream builds for a while...

if only i could find the parts. :D
