1971 CL350 mild build - NYC

Just picked up a 1971 CL350 as a winter project for my girlfriend. I have a mildly modded Triumph Bonneville and after recently going to a few vintage bike shows in Brooklyn, my girlfriend fell in love with the older cafe'd cb/cl's and has been bugging me to learn to ride rather than just be a passenger. I am the type of guy who always needs to have a project (or several going) so after she shot down my idea to build a moonshine still in the backyard, I decided to do something that we both could enjoy and picked her up this bike to build. I live in NYC, but thankfully have a pretty large private backyard so after waiting until a late enough hour, I wheeled the bike through the building and my apt to the backyard and started tearing it down. It's going to be a mild build, keeping the stock frame (though cleaned up a bit) as I do not have access to my mig welder here in NYC. Basic plans are:

-Clean and paint frame
-Clean and paint engine - polish side covers
- go through and update wiring
- rebuild forks
- tapered steering bearings
- clubman bars
- repaint and install spare CL tank that came with the bike
- either clean/rebuild carbs or upgrade to Mikuni VM30s
- switch to CB exhaust headers wrap and install shorty mufflers
- new tires/tubes
- fiberglass cafe style seat and cowl
- new rear suspension

She basically wants the bike to be all black. so it'll be a mini version of my bonneville with norton style honda tank graphics.

in the backyard (I have a 6x6.5' tent garage I'll be setting up to protect from the rain/cold)

I am pretty proficient with paint and mechanical, but my Achilles' heel is definitely wiring. This is going to be a learning experience trying to go through this wiring harness, fix 41 years of splices and issues, and upgrade to make sure it is reliable. I've been trying to sift through all the information here and on hondatwins and am pretty overwhelmed. I'd like to upgrade to a modern fuse panel and modern R/R. Will that be enough as long as the rest of the wiring is gone through and inspected and repaired where necessary? Thanks.

Cheers,
Jason

bike is in it's shelter/garage and mocked up some clubmans for riding position as to decide whether I'd be sticking with the mid controls or going rearsets in the passenger peg mounts. Rearsets it is.

Also ordered all balls tapered steering head bearing kit and a spare uncut wiring harness. Pretty sure I'm going to just go through the wiring harness, repair any issues and upgrade to weatherpack connectors instead of the vintage bullet connectors, install a blade fuse box, and modern R/R. Still debating on upgrading the stator with a Ricks unit.

So after a few days of being stuck inside due to Sandy, I cleaned up and started working on the bike again. Got the engine/swingarm/etc off.

Then started working on the tail. I want to keep as much stock functionality as possible, so I'm using the stock seat pan. Built up the back using expanding foam and covered with fiberglass cloth then mat, and finally kitty hair filler. Also, chopped the rear fender to better figure out the seat lines.

and where it's at before it got too dark/late to continue.

refined the seat a little more, especially where it meets the tank. Got another layer of fiberglass on it and now it's ready for bodyworking.

Spent friday after work breaking down the rest of the bike. Have the forks torn down, triple trees out, bearings out. Forks look ok, with some corrosion under the spring seats but clean as a whistle where it counts. One fork's oil looked absolutely brand new, while the other was nice and milky. New seals on order.

Stripped the frame down to bare metal using a mix of aircraft stripper, steel wool and various scuffing pads. After extensive degreasing and going over several times with aerosol paint prep I shot it with Summit epoxy primer using a preval sprayer. Didn't love the preval sprayer as it sputtered quite a bit, but it got the job done and had enough juice for 2 nice coats. The Summit racing primer covers well. Set up a little heated spray booth in the "workshop" and it actually worked out pretty well.

Yer making pretty good progress so far by the looks of it. I like how yer using the stock rear fender. Not many people hang onto them (myself included). Keep up the good work!!

Frame all primed and out of the "booth". Still have to prime the swingarm and center stand. Then spraying it all with Eastwood extreme chassis black.

Sprayed the chassis black paint and was extremely disappointed on how it sprayed out. I'm using preval sprayers and even after reducing quite a bit it was a splattery mess. Hopefully it levels out a bit as it dries.

After spraying the frame I spent a little time polishing up the fork legs and top triple. Didn't go too nuts with the sanding and polishing as I want to keep a vintage feel. Pretty happy with the results.

Had a busy weekend so was only able to find the time to rebuild the front forks and install the all balls tapered bearing kit. Went in without a hitch. Froze the stem and heated up the lower bearing as many have suggested and a little tapping on some PVC pipe and got it installed. Cut a coil from a spare set of fork springs (external type in '71) and ordered a set of 12" rear shocks to lower the bike just a bit. Hopefully tonight ill get the swingarm, kickstand and front wheel back on. I want to get it a roller and level to better eyeball the seat and tank work.

nice. I really like how you butted the glass up to the tank, what were you using - foam? Also, that frame came out beautiful.

used a mixture of expanding spray foam, fiberglass, and body filler. Going to upholster the seat in diamond stitch vinyl for that old school look.

As for the frame, thanks for the compliment. It was a pain as the Eastwood chassis paint sprayed horribly. I had to scuff the entire frame again and decided to recoat with Rustoleum appliance epoxy and it came out great. A few runs and rough spots but nowhere very visible so I'm happy with it.

I wasn't aware of any vintage bike shows in the city, i'm from eastern long island. I'd definitely hit up those shows when I have spare time.

I went to two this summer. The Brooklyn Invitational http://brooklyninvitationalbikeshow.blogspot.com/ and the one at Works Engineering http://2012.vintagemotorcycleshow.com/

I'm from Smithtown. I currently live in Plattsburgh, though -- finishing my final year in college. I should be moving back to long island or the surrounding area this May. I really want to get everyone on DTT in the area together for a ride. Possibly through the city? Look on the DTT East Coast thread - theres a bunch of us from the city and long island on DTT.
