Go fast and take lots of chances!
Ok, finally starting a thread for my build. I picked up a 1971 Honda SL350 (well, most of one) a month or so back and it will be my winter project to get it ride-able for next season and maybe even some vintage road racing if things pan out right.
The bike came for 140 bucks with a motor with good compression in the stock frame, SL gas tank (if anyone wants this tank it's up for grabs, let me know), rolling on wheels and a box 'o goodies (carbs and some bolts.
First off was to clean up the carbs. There is a pic of them, the slides were frozen solid but the diaphragms still soft and intact! With some penetrating oil and some elbow grease, I pried them out. I ordered K&L rebuild kits and Honda needles and seats only to find I ordered the wrong seats... These are 72 CB 350 carbs, not SL like i thought, they don't fit the stock intake boots. I found some boots I will be picking up soon and I'll re-order the correct needles and seats.
I had to buy a kickstarter (I checked compression of the motor by pushing it around in gear with a gauge in one hole at a time which had to be a funny thing to watch) to test the ignition system, once it arrived I pulled the plugs and kicked he over to see a nice bright spark when resting the plug on the head, woo hoo!!! Just for kicks I sprayed some ether in the intake ports and kicked it to hear a big pa-pa-pow, and a nice plume of fogging oil smoke from me fogging the motor after the compression test. It's gonna run, I can't wait to get the carbs on and get some CL350 Scrambler pipes on it!
I scored a CB360T tank on EBay which has my shape of choice. It has a couple dents but a little bondo and some elbow grease and it'll look great! Bodywork will be Charcoal Grey metallic and the frame will be powder coated red. Lot's of work to do but things will slow down quick in the shop when the snow comes.
