1971 Yamaha CS3 Restoration / Cafe Project

After a week of waiting my gaskets finally came in. I wasted no time in throwing the cylinders back on and getting everything put back together. Before mounting the headers or intake I handpumped the kickstarter a few times and watched all the left over gasoline from the flush shoot out the back. Most wonderful feeling I've had. For anyone unfamiliar with what I did heres a recap.

I managed to dissolve everything into the gasoline i filled the crank with. I then tried to drain it. Whatever else will be burned off or blown out the exhaust.

Tomorrow I've got to get a battery and start the damn thing.

As I lack carb filters and...everything else, I'll probably only be able to run it at an idle and make sure there arent any vaccuum leaks.

great work so far !
CLUBMAN'S :-\ are a terrible choice ,it is a tiny bike the last thing you want is to be riding around hunched so low you can't see thru/over traffic or worse yet the lack of control riding around with zombie arms(trying to sit more upright with arms locked straight :-\)
besides clubman's just look really stupid on 99% of the bikes they are used on

BIG DAY TODAY! With the head gasket coming monday I decided to spend the day working out the cosmetics. I wrapped the exhaust, polished the exhaust, cleaned the crank and surrounding areas, pulled the fenders temporarily, and fabricated up some new bars. Take a look. Only issue is that the wrapping of the wire harness cracked and im going to probably need to redo it.

That bike is pretty slick clean it up keep the raised bars and enjoy it .....if you do put clubman bars make sure they dont dent that awesome tank

Cleaned the intakes and carbs today. Turns out since I diped them, the aluminum kinda fell apart. Spent hours scraping aluminum oxide out of every jet and orifice I could think of. All I need now is a battery and we will be set to go. Also does anyone have any advice regarding rear sets? I already have rear foot pegs so I would think installation wouldn't be crazy hard.

the passenger pegs are mounted to the swingarm thus they are not suitable for riders pegs as you will feel every bump in the road, besides they and like all passenger pegs are just way too far back, that doesn't stop people from using passenger peg locations but it is just the lazy way to do it wrong
with those high pipes and as wide as they are you need to think about what you are doing
it looks like you could go 4" back but if you go up which is what rearsets are suppodsed to do for cornering clearance you are gonna have ankle to pipe issues, the rearsets
you are far better off just using the stock pegs and regular bars, some low 3" rise mx bend bars would be perfect
hey i have the airbox and rubber y connector for the carbs if you need it

Thank you, I think I'm going to go with a hi-flow filter instead. I think it just looks nicer that way.

Got everything haphazardly put together and it started up and idled. I noticed smoke coming out one side and not the other in which i noticed that the intake was not hooked up to the oil pump. Also the engine idles but the then will randomly jump up to 4k rpm and keep climbing, which scares me. I don't have a filter on yet so it might have something to do with the adjustement. Either that or I have a vaccuum leak. I tried putting it in gear. Clutch in, kick down, bike stalls. I think that the clutch cable is not coming out far enough so I need to figure out how to adjust that. Otherwise no REAL issues besides needing to replace the brake wiring on the front brake and hook up the rear brake arm to the switch...thing. Happy to see that I didn't entirely fuck it up.

Well I'm lost :-\ bike was running great the other day, and I put an air filter on, and redid the fuel lines and now she doesnt start. If I open the throttle, hold down the choke and cover the intakes, itll start, rev up to 5k and idle there. WhenI let go of the choke it dies and no amount of throttling can fix this. I am so confused.

you may have a massive air leak do a case pressure test
but make sure the float bowls are filling with fool

Yes, It was working fine yesterday. I just don't understand.

well a case pressure test will tell you exactly what is happening if you have an air leak
the crankshaft seals could have started leaking after a warm/heat cycle, they are old,no?
you did retourque the head after the first heat cycle ?

No I didn't, is that something I should do? Do you think its not the carburators?

yes of course you always must retorque the heads, i can't tell form here what is it, check everything

10 days later. The bolt/tube/axle? thing holding the cylinder and head to the crackcase sheared off leaving me with 3 potentially damaged other ones. I really fucked it up again.

Ya broke a stud?
Not the end of the world - might be some fun digging the busted part out of the cases though, if it broke off down there.
Brand new old stock (NOS) studs are probably on ebay right now if you look, or available from an industrial supplier.
You're working on a bike way older than you are and have to expect a few issues.
BTW, how did you break the damned stud anyway?
Pat
PS don't give up hope

Pat, Thanks for the wise words, lucky it came apart while I was retorquing the head. I got it tight, tighter, and then all of a sudden very loose and it popped off like when you twist a paper clip too many times.
