1972 Honda CL350 Cam Questions

I am currently working on a 1972 Honda CL350 K4, and while in the motor I had a few questions.

My cam chain tension is completely shot (center wheel) and the front guide is worn and will be replaced as well.

One question I had, is how can you tell if a cam chain is in need of replacing? It does have a bit of side movement that is not normal in most chains, I didn't know if these came like this or not (probably not).

When I say side movement I'm talking about when the chain is flexed I can see enough movement the links that they "separate".

The other question I had is what amount if pitting on the rocker arms and cam is acceptable? I have a few minor spots in both a couple of rocker arms and cam, but nothing I worry myself about. Then again this is the first motor teardown I have ever done.

Any help with these is greatly appreciated.

replace the chain, those will break and ruin your day.
lots of places sell full sideplate chains for that motor, they're a really good idea.
post some pictures of the pitting, if it's really minor, then it will probably be okay, if not, it's a recipe for a bad day later.

I'm trying to figure out how to post pics from an iPad.

About the chain, is there a chain worth using that is able to be installed without tearing into the bottom end? I was really hoping to leave that alone, but if not I'll do what I have to.

You can try a master link side plate chain, but it will require a cam chain rivet tool, so that's some dollars

My local Honda shop recommended a cam chain with a master link from KL, a supplier they work with. So we will see what it looks like when it comes.

They were also able to find the tensioner wheel still in stock through Honda, sp that was pretty sweet.
