Chris, I thought about clubmans but with out rear sets I find them really uncomfortable. The seat will sit about a half inch off the frame. I have no choice as I need clearance for the rear tire. I looked at your build and it looks like your loop is shorter which avoids this problem for you. Your frame is a bit different than mine I guess.

I have a couple things to work out. I didn't think about the oil tank fill tube and I am going to have to adjust that somehow and there seems to be a lot of play in the front forks. we'll see.

I know what you mean. There is a little tire to license plate love when I take sweet jumps. I'm actually going to install taller dampers to raise the back up a little. It should help with handling as well.

You can always installed longer bumpstops as well. But be careful doing this.

For the oil tank, that's what I installed a side filler. It's honestly a bit of a pain in the ass, but works fine. It's not like you go through a ton of oil.

Alright you guys, one decent pic for you. more to come. But I also need some help. I am an electrical idiot so I will just tell you what is going on and see what you think. first the pic. I think it looks like a Japanese fighter plane. I think I'm going to cut the thickness of the seat foam in half comfort be damned that thing needs to be thinner!! and get the seat as close to the frame as possible. How often are you going to bottom out anyway?? ::)

I started wiring and had no trouble getting power thru the system, headlight works etc. what I noticed is that when the ignition switch is on the coils get hot. Me thinks this is bad and that I probably have something wired backwards Here is the diagram www.lawrenceotoole.com/.../R5wiringdiag.jpg

Its confusing because the wire colors change as they hit the coils, one is orange, one is gray. I get the basics but have no confidence just moving shit around. any thoughts??

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

Yeah...and don't quote me on this. But on my RD, there is a red/white wire that goes to the coils. The orange wire goes to one (from memory, the left side) and the grey wire goes tot he other.

Did you ground the coils? I sanded a little of the powdercoat on each coil mount to ensure they were well-grounded. Also, does your bike have a ballast resistor for the coils?

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

Thanks, I'll work on the grounding issue. The power wire through the system on this bike is brown. There is a brown wire coming to the coils and and an orange wire and a gray wire coming from the points. Both coils have a brown lead and an orange lead. I wired brown to brown on both and orange to orange on the left coil, gray to orange on the right. I believe this is what the diagram and manual state. Even if I wired right to left and visa versa from the points it shouldn't matter as far as getting spark to the plug. The coils are identical. It would only matter when you tried to actually start the bike, correct? Then the spark would be going to the wrong cylinder.

I'll post some pics later.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

Hey man, I wish I could help on the wiring, but that ain't in my skill set. Sorry.

I was trying to find a decal idea to pitch ya, but I couldn't find anything with the feel I think you might be going for. Me being the stubborn bastard I am I photo-shopped one. It is by no means finished quality, but it gives an idea of what I'm picturing. It might be light years away from what your wanting.

The first is the one I did. The others are just inspiration.

My God!! Man those are killer!! The first one is spot on the feel I'm after. I love the cigar. I'm definitely rocking the yamaha tuning forks on the tank but this would be great on the side covers. can we make his stripes orange instead of yellow? My other thought is maybe the same character with the cigar but with boxing gloves on. though the bike really does look like a fighter plane so the bomb is pretty spot on.

Yes, that's true. But is seems odd the coils are getting hot. That said, I've never felt mine whilst the bike is running, so IDK.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

I can do whatever is needed brother. The cigar and bomb were definitely not finished, just props for ideas. Give me a few and I'll see what I can punch out for ya.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

Don't run the bike if your coils are getting hot, it does sound like youre either missing balast resistors or they are shorted around.....

You're really fucking up my 'No Orange Bikes' rule......damnit! That really looks great. Just lower the seat and ride the shit outta the thing man.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

They are getting hot with just battery power. the bike is not running yet so there is no power coming from the generator. I believe every thing is wired correctly. one of the coils was loose though so there may have been a ground issue. I will power it up again tomorrow and see what happens. How do you "bench test" a coil with a multi meter? Which test lead goes where and how many ohms should it show?

I know what you mean about orange. It would be easy to get carried away. but I think this looks pretty good. its sort of mocking harley davidson.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

Man, I love this! The cigar just screams old school. I don't know how much time you want to put into this but if you want to try this guy in a couple different poses just to see what it looks like that would be cool. I really like this one as is but wouldn't mind seeing one where he looks fast maybe with his back straight out and one fist cocked? something like that. Also where this will be going on a black background maybe it needs to be inside a circle or oval with a colored background? Orange? I REALLY appreciate your time on this and I will absolutely use it once we get it finalized.

Also let me know if I can help you with anything. I could work on a seat cover like the one I did here if that was of interest.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

No exchange needed. Just paying it forward in classic DTT fashion. The cigar looks like it may be some of that funny smoke, but it gets the point across. The wings are quite basic too. If you want him to look fast I might pin them back and square the tips a bit.

Lets see what we can do with this little guy...

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

I was thinking maybe shorten the cigar a bit so it looks like a stogie.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

Sounds good. Any other thoughts, I have done some streamlining but I'll have to finish up in the morning.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

The Hornet is fantastic! I have seen something like it with the CB160 racing in the NW. The cigar is priceless....smoking just like the bike. Maybe try a black stripe on the top of the tank? See how it looks with the hornet.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

You nailed it! I love this!! Suits the bike to a tee. How do I make it stick?

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

I'll PM you the details after I upload everything... Right now I'm digging into "The Clockwork Orange". I like the eyelash thing, but the only other signature details I can find are pretty phallic. I don't think you want him to have a cod piece...

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

Yeah, no, best leave him alone. I'll name him Alex DeLarge after the main character.
