1973 RD350 project?

danfr

Been Around the Block
There's an ad up in my local area for a cheap '73 RD350. It's complete but likely be a project bike. I know nothing about these bikes, so i'm hoping you guys can help me out here.

Parts? Easy to find?

Never worked on a two stroke engine. Are they just as easy or easier to work on?

Are there issues i should be looking at that this particular model has?

Price? He's asking $400 for a complete w/ title and it was running when he put it away (not too sure when). I think these bikes go for more but wasn't too sure. (Keep in mind, used bikes typically sell for more in Canada).

Any input is appreciated!

BUY THAT BIKE NOW!!!!!!!! Seriously. $400 for a complete, titled and running rd350 is a steal! They are badass, two wheeled, murdercycles. With bolt ons and minor engine work it can be in the 50-60 HP range. In stock trim its a 750 killer. BUY THAT BIKE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Parts are available, two strokes are easy to work on (very simple motors), and goddamn are they fast!

the seller failed to mention in the ad that it needs a top end rebuild and new tires.....

i got enough projects going on to start another one....

Still doesnt sound too bad, go for it. Even if you dont do something with it, you could always flog it and get your money back.

Dude, top end rebuild on a two stroke is a gasket for the head and a spark plug. Thats it. If it needs rings, thats shit simple too.

he said he was pretty sure something blew in the right cylinder. Something about metal chunks coming out of the exhaust. So I'm thinking gasket, rings, pistons (potentially a bore and hone as a well).

I have one project going, another project in queue and hardly any time. It would've been pretty fun to work on but my gut instinct was to pass.

.....

after doing some ebay pricing, you guys are right though, it would be pretty easy to rebuild the top end...hmm.....christ....i'm torn....

I like the fact that he was honest enough to say there were pices of metal coming out of the exhaust. Seem like he's telling you everything thats wrong, and you'll have fewer suprises down the road/rebuild!

Honestly man. For $400 its beyond a good deal. See if he'll take $300. The RD will become your favorite bike.

Very cool. Cant wait to see her. And if you ever decide that you dont want to put the time and money into her... LET ME KNOW! Ill take her off your hands.

well, thar she is boys...gave her a quick wash before sundown
