Hey I have got a 1974 cb200 and the carb boots have craked and the old filters are crap. Does anybody know which modern air filters will fit without welding a new frame or needing custom filters? Also didn't know if this was the place to ask so I just went for it. I am a major noob as this is my first bike. I was looking at uni and k and n but I don't think they have anything that fits perfectly.
well the thing is I can't find them anywhere and even harder to find are the carb boots that connect the filters to the carbs. If you know where I could find those that could work but otherwise is new or nothing.
I think I might go with the uni filters they seem like they might work. Is tuning the carbs going to be a major pain after adding them or will all it need is different jetting
with out question it will need jets and tuning.
dont cheap out on jets and buy like 3 or 4 sets of different sizes to mess with.
no one on the interwebs will be able to tell you what size you need, they will be able to help you with a range or where to start but you will need to test and tune to find the set you need.
How is the rest of the bike running? before you start modding or trying to improve it make sure it is running 100% as it left the factory
Surffly is right- the chances of it running at its peak without tuning is pretty much slim to none.
Adjust the valves to spec and make sure your timing is spot on- then try bigger jets. Best advice I can give is to dig through the other cb200 builds and see if anybody lists their sizes (just to give you an idea where to start).
Sounds like I'll have my work cut out for me. And moving on to the rest of the bike it barely runs. The mufflers have holes in them so I am trying to find some universal slip-ons, the petcock may or may not work properly, it won't idle and when I do run it the rpms jump up to 5 and 6 thousands on its own. I was hoping getting the carbs working properly and the exhaust fixed would allow me to get it idling but this is my first bike so I am not super sure what to do. Learning as I go pretty much. Also I am not looking for any kind of major performance upgrades at this time I just have to get the dang thing running first.
take it one system at a time. the important thing is to understand how each system effects the others.
Get it running well as close to stock as possable first.
you do have a manual right?
set the timming and install new points/condensor
new plugs
fresh oil...not synthetic
do a compression test first though.....
clean the carbs and make sure they have the right jets
adjust the floats as per the manual
check the vavles and make sure they are with in specs
if everything isnt with in spec then any changes that you make will only help you chase your tail....
Sweet thanks for the tips. I have manuals timing and points are good, new plugs, I haven't done anything with the oil, need the tool for compression, carbs are clean and set right as far as I know and I need to do a valve check. Other than that the only other thing wrong is that it runs super rich the plugs are always burnt to a crisp-not good.
