Bought this bike off of Craigslist, was looking for a project and I'm pretty sure that I found one.

Don't know how long the bike has been sitting.

The engine was repainted some point in the past.

Double dot above and below the - on the engine, which is good news.

Bike turns over with the kick starter.

The tank was repainted as well, not good enough for me to leave as is. The tank has some rust in it as well. Going to hit that with some vinegar and BB's, then some evapo-rust, then hit it with Red-Kote.

From what I've read, if you need to clean/de-rust the inside of a tank you're likely to damage the finish on the tank which needs to be redone anyways.

Already had disassembled the petcock and dipped it in carb dip. Need to pickup a rebuild kit next for that.

Clymer manual is on order. Going to work through the explosion / parts drawings to try and figure out what's missing on the bike and start breaking it down, and making a parts list of things to order, and special tools.

Waiting for Vermont to cash my registration checks.

New wiring harness for sure, as I'm pretty sure Ray Charles was giving directions to Helen Keller on the wiring. Going to order a new one from Sparck Moto.

Going to try to keep the bike as stock as possible with the exception of adding some updates. Stronger headlight LED / HID? LED turn signal bulbs, tail light , improved charging, improved ignition. I still plan on using the points, but I think there's a setup out there that doesn't pass the current through it so they don't get eaten as quickly. Can't remember it at this point, will have to research more.

Also, the setup for the points you're after is called a "points saver". It can also sometimes be sold as a transistorized ignition assist. Probably some other names, too.

The unit I've got on my bike (until I finish the R&D for my own) is made by a guy on SOHC4 called, "Hondaman". I highly recommend it.

points saver! That's exactly it, must have drank too much Yellowstone this week. I should probably cut back and just stick with Old Overholt instead.

Made some progress on the tear down.

Kind of hard to see in this picture but it looks like someone's home made gasket here. Can't wait to get it off, wagering on a tide box personally.

Found this inside the tail light, luckily no friends to go with it.

Unscrewed the second screw on the seat lock, and it blew apart on me. Found the latch and the spring, going to have to look through the parts fiche to see if I lost anything. I really need my Cylmer manual to show up...

Here's some more rubber parts that I'm going to have to buy, these are falling apart.

Started to strip a screw removing the starter. Damn, I really need to buy a set of JIS screwdrivers already.

I'm not really carb saavy at this point but it looks like someone wedged a screwdriver in there at some point. Kind of irritating.

Too bad costco is out of bulk containers of pinesol. Had to settle for the small ones at wallyworld. Hopefully the pine scent will overpower the scent of carb cleaner at this point.

Placed an order with Sparck Moto for a new wiring harness.

State of Vermont cashed my check so I should be getting my registration and plate within the next week or so. Buying a bike with a bill of sale (no title) is much easier processing through Vermont than Tennessee. Mailed it in last Friday, not a bad turn around. Full steam ahead on the bike now.

Hopefully the weather gets good enough to hit the tank with some aircraft paint remover. I'm debating putting some socket set screws in the logo holes to keep the crud out of it.

Didn't do much work on Saturday, went out and rode one of my semi-working bikes (R1100R). I mic'ed the clutch when I pulled the starter on it, wasn't sure I did it right but thought it to be at the minimum, but after this weekend I'm sure the clutch is on it's last leg. The starter also isn't engaging properly. Cleaned that and swapped the solenoid out back in December, but that doesn't seem to have fixed it.

Went to a swap meet on Sunday in Nashville. Mostly car parts.... but... managed to find this when I was looking for the entrance to the next building:

A pair of the air intake side covers. $15, not bad, one side is a little chewed up but I didn't find a lot of motorcycle things at the show so I was pretty happy.

Started looking at the carbs a bit more, free'ed the intake boots from the carbs and split them. As you can see one of the ???? <-- someone fill this in who knows what they're talking about here.

Yeah, one of those is stuck. I split the carbs apart and they're soaking in pinesol right now.

It also looks like someone jammed a screwdriver into here for who knows what reason

But... I also found this bit of Harley bait. "Made in America" I don't mean to start a flame war in this thread but I found this for $10 at the swap meet.

AMF Harley Davidson... made in Japan. I'll put it on the shelf / coffee table if I ever get one. Nice conversation piece.

The carbs and other parts continue to dip inside my tub full of pinesol. Carb dip next, pinesol again and possibly a lemon juice boil. Off to the Viking after that for rebuild.

Harleys still use Japanese parts. Front forks on many models is a Showa.

Harley used Keihin Carburetors for years....
