Not really sure my build falls under cafe racers, but here it is anyways. I got this old girl way back in 2004 for $200, it hadn't ran since the early 80's. So i brought it home and she sat under a cover in my garage until recently. Under the rust dirt grime and dust i knew she was worth saving, i got tired of all my friends coming over and telling me to get rid of that old rust trap and so on. I pulled it out of its home for the last 7 years and began tearing into it. The bike "Black Beauty" only has 10,000 original miles (1 owner bike), but alot of the original parts were beyond saving, so i will be doing a period correct resto. The bodywork, frame and swing arm are at the painter's house right now being shot with high gloss black. Everything else is at the powder coaters being done in high gloss black as well. I upgraded the wheels with a pair on Enkie mag wheels from a 1980 Kz 1000 ltd with will be painted black chrome from duplicolor. In the front she will be stopped by a pair of GPZ 900 dual calipers, and an ltd 1000 rear. She will have GSXR 1000 master cylinders front and rear as well as braided steel brake lines. The motor runs and is tight with no leaks, so i will hand polish it to a brilliant shine. The header i will be running is a 4 into 1 Gemini, a really rare pipe from what i can gather, that will be painted black as well. The carbs will be 26mm from a kz 900 along with the stock z1 airbox, and a pair of clubman handle bars i have had sitting around, mini stalk turn signals, and im still undecided on the seat. Here are some pics to hold you over till i get the paint and powder back.

Sorry i neglected to take pics of the teardown :( Here are some right before paint and powder.

It really is....down to the down-tube over spine steering tube orientation.....that gives me ideas, and you KNOW that is dangerous!

My intentions with this bike were to get it running and ride it, but its winter and the next thing i knew the motor was out of the frame and realized i wouldn't be happy with a shinny motor in a ratty bike, so thats where the fun came into it. I also forgot to mention, i got a new wiring harness for it, i will also be running 3.0 ohm green dyna coils and accel wires and a the stock point ignition, and i decided to get a maintenance free AGM gel battery. Tim i never noticed that but your right they are very similar. Kanticoy thank god i have alot of friends in the bike/car resto world because this bike would be costing me an arm and a leg to do right now, and the fact my girlfriend will sit out in the garage with me and work on my projects for hours with me ........... she's a keeper for sure. All the fasteners were rust and knawed up beyond use, and ideas where i can get shinny new ones? Home Depot? Lowes? Ace?

Almost any large hardware store will carry stainless versions of the hardware you need. Look at Z1 Enterprises as well. Im sure they have something that would help in that area. Also, not sure where you live but all major citys have at least one fastener specialty supply. Look your local one up. They have or can get ANYTHING that was ever made to hold thing together, down, or apart. When do you expect to have everything back from the painter/coaters?

Thanks Von Yinzer, i have a large order with Z1 Enterprises as we speak. Went to Ace hardware tonight and got all the stuff i needed. My paint and powder coat should be back by the end of the month. Ill try and get over by his house and take some pics for you guys.

Nice find!! 8) Gotta love old kaw's! ;)

Keep the pics comin'! :)

Thanks Drewski :) I love the old kaws. Im replacing some gaskets on the motor and doing alot of cleaning and polishing. Any ideas on how to shim the valves?

Well while im waiting for everything to come back from the paint and powder coating, im going to split the gauges and take a shot at restoring them.

tea Spoons.

Seriously. Grab two tea spoons and put the tips under the needle hub opposite each other and lever both equally and watch the needle slide straight off.

You really should brace the frame.
Stock, even the Z1A is 'bit wobbly', I have no idea how bad the Z1 would be with virtually no bracing around steering head.
Fitting a bracing kit totally transforms handling on Z1A.
Here's pics of the one my sister had with bracing kit welded in

Do the needles just pop right back on or is there a trick? I tried the gauges with a drill the speedo didn't work , but the tach worked fine, so i swapped the drive unit out with one i had off of a low mileage KZ 650, all is good now :) Painter called a bit ago, looks like ill have everything back in the next week or so.
