This is my first motorcycle which I picked up for $800 from the original owner. I've always been into bmx and road bikes so this project was right in line with my obsession/passion with bikes. It only had 800 miles on it but still had its share of problems. Since I live in a rowhome in Philadelphia I don't have a sweet garage to work on it so my roommate and I turned our living room and sidewalk into a workshop. It took about 2 months to get it running and now i'm just working on polishing everything and modifying it more into a cafe style bike.
Its been a real learning experience and I was able to gain a lot of useful knowledge from reading through the many posts here on dotheton so I thought I should post some pictures of my creation.... so here it is.
Well I've been going back adn forth on mine as to what to do out back and this is what I'm leaning toward at the moment:
Trim the fender back to about 5" past the seat, ditch that HUGE OEM tail light and go with a nice small cateye with built in plate mount. I like the stock seat too.
Ditch the stock mufflers, they are restrictive and HEAVY. Throw some peashooters on there, also ditch that goofy crossover box up front, run a straight piece of tubing in it's place. The very best thing you cna do for this particular bike is open up the flow (in and out) and put it on a diet.
Thanks for the suggestions. Swagger, i agree the crossover box has to be replaced with a straight pipe or even just closing up the holes.
I am going to start disassembling the front to change out the headlight brackets, lollipop turnsignals and tail light. These are the items i'm looking at for the replacements. Any thoughts or suggestions? Will my current headlight bracket slide off the forks easily once I remove the top of the tree?
Turn Signal for the front and rear:

Also, I'm unsure about using an LED tail light with my signals being bulbs just for asthetics. Im overall undecided of how I want to reshape my back end/fender.
I'll update with pictures once I get started this weekend.
You'll want to think about different headlite ears. Those chrome ones look nifty but they are trouble at best.
They vibrate (on a twin) like mad, enough for things to come apart and in general don't look as nice as the pics. I bought some for mine and they still sit in a box somewhere. I picked up a pair of Cerani cast aluminum ears that really have a nice period look to them and they are SOLID. I found a guy on ebay that's selling really good copies of them in a couple different lengths.
I agree with Swagger. I was thinking about removing my rear fender and I might pick up some of those lights. I'd go for the amber lenses on my bike though.
I have made some small progress on my bike now that the weather has started to warm up just a bit. Unfortunately it's raining this morning so i'll have to wait till next weekend to make some more progress. Anyway, yesterday I added the headlight visor, new tail light and removed the indicator lights. With the indicator lights gone I have room to make a new bracket so that my tach and speedo can sit lower and closer together. My goal is to really compact everything in behind my headlight. Im going to move my horn up behind the headlight somehow, maybe mount it on the inside of the headlight ear. I also decided i liked the look of the bike without the side panels. Here's some pics of the progress. I can't wait for the warm weather for riding and i'll have more day light hours after work in the evening to work on it.
That is looking great! I really dig the pic with the city street and sunset in the background, I've saved a copy of this on my harddrive!
I even kinda dig it with the stock length rear fender, it's pretty subtle really. Can't wait to see how this turns out....
Okay, so I need some help. I've got the bike running solid now so i'm replacing the stock airboxes with pods and rejetting, however, I can't seem to find any slow jets for my carbs. Sirusconinc.com has a range of main's but no slow jets. Does anyone know where to find them?
My buddy and I just tuned his cb650 (pictured below) with pods so I know the trial and error of jetting but if anyone has some insight to jetting 500t carbs with pods and stock exhaust it would be appreciated. With his stock exhaust and pods we used 42 slow and 110 mains incase anyone is looking to do the same.
I'm also working on a seat which i'll post pictures of soon.
please don't mess with the seat! Buy another one and mess with it! love the stock brown seat.
the bike looks great! any ideas on colors, or are you planning on leaving it in primer?
Well, I am making some progress with bondo-ing the tank to cover the many dents on it and smooth over where the badges were.
crazypj: thanks for the info. I'll keep my eyes out for some Mikuni's or CR's and for now I'm leaving the stock air boxes on till I finish up some other stuff on the bike.
neophyteCB450: Don't worry I'm NOT altering my stock seat. I'm working on a solo seat the uses the stock hinge and lock so that I have the option to swap it back and forth so that I can still ride the gf on the back whenever I want.
Mid-bondo. I'm pleased with how it came out and i'm going to primer it this weekend for the time being and i'll put some pictures up of that.
I too like the brown seat. Keep the rear fender the stock length and paint both fenders the same color as the tank or black that would help brit bike the look. Change the silencers to triumph style or dunstall repros from Mikes XS for about 150 bucks, peashooters would be nice but I've only seen them in stainless at 200 bucks each and that bike will Brit up nicely.
